MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 1 ball of any color.

CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY FLOSS, 2 skeins of a contrasting color.

Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.
A bone ring.

Starting at tail, ch 13. 1st row: S c in 3rd ch from hook, * d c in next ch, s c in next ch. Repeat from * across, ending with d c in same ch as last s c. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: * S c in next d c, d c in next s c. Repeat from * across, ending with s c and d c in top st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 3 inches. Ch 1, turn at end of last row. Place a marker in work at both ends. Next row: * D c in next s c, s c in next d c. Repeat from * across, ending with s c in top st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Following row: * S c in next d c, d c in next s c. Repeat from * across, end­ing with d c in turning ch-1. Ch 1, turn. Repeat last 2 rows alternately until piece measures 5 inches in all. Place another marker in both ends of work. Fins will be worked between markers. Keeping continuity of pattern, decrease 1 st at both ends of each row, until piece measures 7 inches in all—to dec. 1 st, work off 2 sts as 1 st. Then work d c in every other st across and fasten off. Make another piece same as this. Embroider eye and mouth with Six Strand as in illustration, on each piece. Place padding between crocheted pieces and over-cast edges together. With Six Strand, work s c closely over ring and sew to mouth end of potholder.

FINS (Top and Bottom) …  Attach Six Strand and work about 16 s c's through both thicknesses between markers. Dec. 1 st at mouth edge every row until no sts remain. Fasten off.

TAIL …  Attach Six Strand and work about 14 s c's through both thicknesses along tail end. Inc. 1 st at both ends of each row until there are 26 s c—to inc., work 2 s c in 1 s c. Shape tail as follows: Ch 2, turn; 2 d c in 1st st, d c in 6 sts, half d c in 4 sts, s c in 4 sts, half d c in 4 sts, d c in 6 sts, 3 d c in last st. Fasten off.
