Square Dance Potholder Pattern

MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 1 ball each of a light and dark color.

Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 6 or 7.

This amount is sufficient for 3 pot holders, if colors are reversed.

FRONT … Starting at one end, with light color, ch 65 (to measure 7 inches). 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, and in each ch across (63 d c, counting turning ch). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Holding dark color along top of previous row and working over it to conceal it, with light color, make d c in next 2 d c, leaving the last 2 loops of last d c on hook. Drop light color, pick up dark color and draw through last 2 loops, thus changing color in last d c of light color-group. With dark color, make d c in 12 d c, carrying light color con­cealed in d c's and changing color in last d c as before. Make 3 light d c and 12 dark d c alternately 3 more times. Drop dark color and with light color, work d c in next 2 d c and in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: D c in next 2 d c, changing color as before; then work 12 dark and 3 light d c alternately across. Ch 3, turn. 4th, 5th and 6th rows: Same as 3rd row. 7th row: With light color, work d c in each d c across, concealing dark color as before. Repeat the last 6 rows for pattern 3 more times. Fasten off.

BACK … Starting at one end, with light color ch 65 (to measure 7 inches). 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, and in each ch across (63 d c, counting turning ch). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: D c in each d c across. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 2nd row 23 more times. Do not fasten off. Place padding between the 2 crocheted pieces (for padding see patternbook page) and, working along top of potholder, through both thicknesses, work 2 s c in corner, * ch 3, s c in last s c, s c in next 3 sts. Repeat from * across, making 3 s c in corner. Work along other 3 sides in same manner. Join and fasten off. Sew on a bone ring.
