MATERIALS: Bucilla Wondersheen Crochet and Knitting Cotton, Article 3666, 30 skeins;
or
Bucilla Blue Label Super Crochet and Knitting Cotton, Article 3457, 29 skeins.
1 Bucilla Steel Crochet Hook, No. 9, Article 4300.

Gauge: Each square should measure 4-inches, from picot-loop to picot-loop.

Each wheel should measure 2 inches in diameter.

Squares—Ch 42, work 1 d c in 10th st from hook, * ch 3, skip 3 sts on chain, 1 d c in next st; repeat from * to end of chain (9 spaces in row). 2nd row: ch 7, turn, work 1 d c in 2nd d c below, * 3 d c in next space, 1 d c in next d c, ch 3, 1 d c in next d c; repeat from * across, end with 1 d c in 6th st of chain 9 in row below. 3rd row: ch 7, turn, work 1 d c in 2nd d c below, * ch 3, skip 3 sts, 1 d c in next d c; repeat from * across, end with ch 3, 1 d c in 4th st of turning chain. 4th row: ch 7, turn, work 1 d c in 2nd d c below, * 3 d c in next space, 1 d c in next d c, ch 3, 1 d c in next d c; repeat from * across, end with 1 d c in 4th st of turning chain. Repeat the last 2 rows twice, then repeat the 3rd row once more (9 rows in entire square). Square should now measure 2¾ inches.

Edging—Ch 1, turn, work 4 s c in corner space † 3 s c in next space, 2 s c in next space, ch 10, work a slip st in first s c of chain, turn, work 3 s c in space formed by ch 10, * ch 3, work 3 s c in same space; repeat from * twice (this completes a 3-picot-loop), then work 1 s c in same space on last row of square as the other 2 s c are worked in, 3 s c in each of the next 3 spaces, 2 s c in next space, work another picot-loop in this space, 1 more s c in same space, 3 s c in next space, 7 s c in corner space; repeat from † around, ending with 3 s c in same space as the first 4 s c of round, join with a slip st in first s c. 2nd round: * ch 7, work 1 s c in first picot of first 3-picot- loop, ch 7, skip 1 picot, 1 s c in next picot on same loop, ch 7, skip to next picot-loop, work 1 s c in first picot of this loop, ch 7, 1 s c in 3rd picot of same loop, ch 7, 1 s c in center st of corner space of square; repeat from * around, join with a slip st in first s c of round. Wheels—Ch 10, join with a slip st into a ring, ch 3, work 23 d c in ring, join with a slip st to top st of ch 3 at beginning of round (24 d c in round, including the ch 3, which always counts as the first st). 2nd round: ch 3, 1 d c in next st, * ch 5, skip 1 st in round below, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with ch 5, 1 slip st in top st of ch 3 at beginning of round. 3rd round: ch 1, 1 s c in same place as the slip st, 1 s c in next d c, * 7 d c in space, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with a slip st in each of the next 5 sts. 4th round: 1 s c in next st, * ch 8, 1 s c in center sl of next shell; repeat from * around, join with a slip st. 5th round: work a 3-picot-group in each space of round below, join and fasten off thread. Make 457 of these wheels.

Arrange squares and wheels in places as shown in diagram; tack picots in places as shown.

Border—Working from wrong side of spread and beginning at upper right-hand corner of spread, work 1 s c in first free picot of first wheel, * ch 7, skip 1 picot, 1 s c in next picot, ch 7, 1 s c in next picot; repeat from * to end picot of wheel, omit the chain after last s c, 1 s c in next free picot of next wheel, continue in this way around 3 sides of spread, ending with ch 7, 1 s c in last free picot of last wheel of border. 2nd row: ch 1, turn, work a 3-picot group under each ch 7 of row below. 3rd row: ch 7, turn, work a s c in center picot of first picot group below, ch 7 and 1 s c in center picot of each of the next 8 picot-groups below, omit the chain, work 1 s c in center picot of next picot-group, ch 7 and 1 s c in center picot of each of the next 2-picot-groups, 1 s c in center picot of next picot-group, ch 7 and 1 s c in center picot of each of the next 6-picot-groups; con­tinue in this way to work along 3 sides of spread, omitting the chain at joinings of wheels. 4th row: same as 2nd row; fasten off thread and darn in all ends. Tack the ends of border to spread at top of spread, so that border will not curl at ends.
