Gauge: Each hexagon should measure 3½ inches

Hexagon—Ch 10, join with a slip st into a ring, ch 3, work 23 d c in ring, join with a slip st in top st of ch 3 at beginning of round (24 d c in ring, including the chain 3 at beginning of round, which counts as the first d c of round). 2nd round: ch 6, skip 1 st, 1 d c in next st, * ch 3, skip next st, 1 d c in next st; repeat from * around, end with ch 3, join with a slip st in 3rd st of ch 6 at beginning of round (12 spaces in round). 3rd round: ch 4, work 3 trebles (twice over hook) in first space, * ch 3, work 4 trebles in next space; repeat from * around, end with ch 3, join with a slip st in top st of ch 4 at beginning of round (12 groups of 4 trebles in round). 4th round: ch 4, work 1 treble in each of the 3 trebles in first group below (taking up the back thread of st only, unless otherwise stated), * ch 5, skip the chain below, 1 treble in each of the next 4 trebles below; repeat from * around, end with ch 5, 1 slip st in top st of ch 4 at beginning of round. 5th round: work same as 4th round, but work ch 7 between each group. 6th round: ch 4, work 1 treble in each of the 3 trebles below; * ch 9, 1 treble in each of the next 4 trebles, ch 4, 1 s c in next space, ch 4, 1 treble in each of the next 4 trebles; repeat from * around, end with ch 4, 1 s c in last space, ch 4, join with a slip st in top st of ch 4 at beginning of round and fasten off, leaving an end long enough to sew with. Make 769 of these hexagons. Arrange hexagons in places as shown in diagram, sew from wrong side with an over-hand stitch, taking up only 1 st on each edge, thus forming a raised ridge on right side, beginning at end where thread was left hanging.

Edging—Working from right side and beginning at upper right-hand corner of spread, work 1 s c in space after first s c of corner hexagon, ch 7, 1 s c in next space, * ch 7, 1 more s c in same space, ch 7, and 1 s c in each of the next 3 spaces; repeat from * once, then ch 7, 1 more s c in same space, ch 7, 1 s c in next space, ch 3, 1 d c in seam st, ch 3, 1 s c in space after next s c on new hexagon. Continue in this way around entire spread, ending with ch 3, 1 d c in seam st, ch 3, join with a slip st in first s c of round. 2nd round: ch 5, thread twice over hook, draw up a loop in space, thread over and through 2 loops, over and through 2 more loops; retaining the last 2 loops on hook, thread twice over hook, draw up another loop in same space, over and through 2 loops twice in succession, over and through remaining 3 loops on hook (petal stitch at beginning of round), ch 5, thread twice over hook, draw up a loop in same space, over and through 2 loops, twice in succession, retaining the last 2 loops on hook, thread twice over hook, draw up another loop in same space, over and through 2 loops, twice in succession, retaining the 3 loops now on hook, thread over twice, draw up a 3rd loop in same space, over and through 2 loops twice in succession, over and through 3 loops, over and through remaining 2 loops on hook (regular petal stitch), ch 5, work another petal stitch in same space, * ch 5, 1 s c in next space, ch 5, work 3 petal stitches with ch 5 between each, in next space; repeat from * 4 times around corner hexagon, omit the ch 5, skip the next 2 spaces (ch 3, 1 d c, ch 3), work 3 petal stitches with ch 5 between each, in next space. Continue in this way to work in petal stitch groups around entire spread, join with a slip st in top of first petal stitch of round. Final round: slip st to center of chain, 1 s c in space, ch 7, work a slip st in 4th st from hook (picot), ch 3, 1 s c in next space, * ch 7, picot, ch 3, 1 s c in next space, 1 s c in next space, ch 7, picot, ch 3, 1 s c in next space; repeat from * around entire spread, omitting the picot chain at joinings of hexagons, join and fasten off as before. Darn in all ends.
