Florentine Banquet Cloth Pattern

This exquisite lacey cloth can be made in any desired size by joining the small sections. Exact directions and the materials required for the following popular size banquet cloths are given: 54 x 54" square, 54 x 72" oblong, 72 x 90" oblong, 72 x 108" oblong.

Approximate Size: 72 inches by 108 inches

MATERIALS: Bucilla Wondersheen Crochet and Knitting Cotton, Article 3666, 14 skeins;
or
Bucilla Blue Label Super Crochet and Knitting Cotton, Article 3457, 13 skeins.
1 Bucilla Steel Crochet Hook No. 9, Article 4300.

Gauge: Each square should measure 5½ inches

Scroll Centers—Ch 8, join with a slip st into a ring, ch 12, * slip st in each st of chain 12, 1 s c in ring; turn, work 14 s c under the chain, work a slip st in end st of chain; turn, work 1 s c on back thread of first s c, 2 s c on back thread of each of the next 6 sts, 1 s c on back thread of each of the last 7 s c, 1 s c in ring; ch 12, turn, skip 9 s c, work 1 s c in next st; turn, repeat from * 6 times, then slip st in each st of chain 12, work 1 s c in ring; turn, work 14 s c under chain, a slip st in end st; turn, work 1 s c on back thread of first s c, 2 s c on back thread of each of the next 5 sts, drop loop from hook, insert it in the end st of first scroll, also insert it in the dropped loop and draw through, work 2 s c on back thread of next s c on 8th scroll, 1 s c on back thread of each of the last 7 s c, 1 s c in ring and fasten off thread. Working from same side as last row on scrolls, work 1 s c in 3rd st of any scroll, * ch 7, slip st in 5th st from hook (picot), ch 9, picot, ch 3, skip 5 sts on same scroll, 1 s c in next st (a 2-picot-loop), ch 7, picot, ch 3, skip 5 sts on next scroll, 1 treble (twice over hook) in next st, ch 7, picot, ch 9, picot, ch 3, 1 treble in next st (corner space), ch 7, picot, ch 3, skip first 2 sts on next scroll, 1 s c in next st; repeat from * around, join with a slip st in first s c of round and fasten off. Make 276 of these scroll motifs.

Squares—† Ch 12, work 1 d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each st to end of chain (10 d c in row, includ­ing the ch 3 at beginning of row, which always counts as the first d c); * ch 10, turn, work 1 d c in top st of turning chain below; ch 3, turn, work 8 d c under chain, 1 d c in 3rd st of chain; repeat from * 6 times, then repeat from † 3 times, join into a square with a slip st in the first st of foundation chain on first ladder. Turn, work 3 s c around the post of last d c made, 3 s c under the chain, 3 s c around post of next d c, continue in this way around inner edge of square, working 3 s c in each space and 3 s c around the post of each d c.

Joining—Work a slip st in each of the next 5 sts on edge of square, ch 4, turn, skip 8 s c (4 sts on each side of corner), work a slip st in next st, ch 7, pick up a scroll center and working from right side of last round, make 1 d c in a corner space, * ch 7, skip 5 s c on edge of ladder, 1 slip st in next s c, ch 5, work 1 d c in top of next treble on scroll, ch 5, skip 5 s c on ladder, slip st in next s c, ch 5, 1 s c under next 2-picot loop, ch 3, skip 5 s c on ladder, slip st in next s c, ch 3, 1 more s c in same space on scroll, ch 5, skip 5 s c on ladder, 1 slip st in next s c, ch 5, 1 d c in top of next treble on scroll, ch 5, skip 5 s c on ladder, slip st in next s c, ch 7, 1 d c in next corner space, ch 7, skip 5 s c on ladder, slip st in next s c, ch 4, skip 8 sts on corner of ladder, slip st in next st, ch 7, 1 slip st in top of last d c; repeat from * around, end with ch 7, a slip st in top of first d c of round, ch 7, a slip st in same st as first slip st on edge of ladder; fasten off thread. Make and join 150 of these squares, leaving 126 center scrolls free to be joined later.

Arrange squares in places as shown on diagram and tack corners of ladders with a strong tacking.

Fill in the remaining large spaces with scroll cen­ters, by working a round of s c around inner edges of squares, then joining in the scroll centers as before.

Small Flowers—Ch 5, join with a slip st into a ring, * ch 4, thread over hook, draw up a loop in ring, over and through 2 loops, thread over, draw up another loop in ring, over and through 2 loops, over and through the next 2 loops, over and through re­maining 2 loops on hook, ch 2, slip st in top of cluster just made, ch 4, 1 s c in ring; repeat from * 3 times, thus completing a 4-petal flower, join with a slip st to first petal and fasten off. Make 325 of these flowers. Tack 275 flowers in small open spaces between the ladders, leaving 50 flowers to be tacked in later.

Edging—Working from right side and beginning on a corner of cloth, work a row of s c around entire cloth as follows: work 3 s c around post of each d c and 3 s c under each chain, along edge of ladder, then work 1 slip st in each st along V at corner of square, continue in this way around, join with a slip st in first s c of round and fasten off.

Tack the 50 flowers in place around edge of cloth as shown in illustration, then working from right side and beginning in free petal of 1st flower at tip of corner square, make a loop on hook, work 1 treble in free picot, ch 7, slip st in 5th st from hook (picot), ch 2, 1 more treble in same place, ch 7, picot, ch 2, work a treble in picot of next petal, ch 7, picot, ch 2, skip 4 s c on square, 1 treble in next st, * ch 7, picot, ch 2, skip the next 5 s c on edge of square, 1 treble in next st; repeat from * 5 times, then ch 7, picot, ch 2, work 1 treble in picot of next flower, ch 7, picot, ch 2, a treble in picot of next petal, ch 7, picot, ch 2, 1 more treble in same place, ch 7, picot, ch 2, a 3rd treble in same place; work along this side of square in same way to within 4 s c of V, omit the picot-chain after the last treble, skip 8 sts at V of points and work 1 treble in next st. Continue in this way to work around entire cloth, being careful to have all points worked in same way, end with a treble in same place as the 2 trebles at beginning of round, ch 7, picot, ch 2, join with a slip st in top of first treble. 2nd round: ch 13, picot, ch 2, a treble in same place as the joining st below, * ch 7, picot, ch 2, work a treble in next treble; repeat from * to next corner, work this corner like first and continue down side of point to within 1 treble at V of points, omit the picot chain, skip 2 picot chains below, work a treble in next treble.
