Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, 2 balls of White, size 30. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 9 or 10. 1 snap fastener.
Collar. Beginning at neck, ch 268 (to measure about 20 inches), turn. 1st row: D c in 7th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch, repeat from * across (88 sps). Ch 5, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: D c in 1st sp, * ch 2, d c in next sp, repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn. 4th row: S c in 1st sp, * ch 4, s c in next sp, repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn. 5th and 6th rows: Work ch-4 loops across. Ch 5, turn. 7th and 8th rows: Work ch-5 loops across. Ch 5, turn. 9th row: Work ch-5 loops across to within 1 loop from end of row, then make 1 s c in last loop (thus decreasing 1 loop). 10th to 15th rows incl: Like 9th row, decreasing 1 loop at end of each row. 16th row: Like 9th row, but make ch-6 loops instead of ch-5. Then break off. 17th row: Attach thread to loop at end of 9th row, and work ch-6 loops around the outer edge as far as the last loop of the 9th row on other end. Break off.
Edging. Attach thread to end of foundation ch and work 2 d c in each loop with ch-2 (or sometimes ch-3, if necessary, so that work lies flat) between each d c, around the entire outer edge as far as end of foundation ch on other side. Ch 1, turn. * Work 3 s c in each of next 3 sps, 2 s c in next sp, s c in next d c (12 s c), ch 7, turn, s c in 6th s c, ch 7, s c in end s c, ch 1, turn. 3 s c in 1st loop, ch 4 for a p, 7 s c in same loop, 7 s c in next loop, ch 7, turn. S c in 6th s c just before p of completed loop, ch 1, turn. 5 s c in this loop, ch 4, 5 s c in same loop, 1 s c in next (incompleted) loop, ch 4, 3 s c in same loop. Repeat from * around outer edge of collar. Break off. Now attach thread to end of foundation ch and work around neck edge as follows: 3 s c in each sp across, ch 1, turn, and work s c's back and forth for ½ inch, increasing when necessary to have work lie perfectly flat (when turned over the collar). Then ch 5, turn, ** skip 1 s c, d c in next s c, ch 1, repeat from ** across. Ch 1, turn and work from first * of edging. Then turn work over to right side on foundation ch and holding right side of work toward you work a row of s c over foundation ch to keep work lying down. Fasten collar with a snap fastener.
