Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, Size 30, 3 balls. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 6.

To begin, ch 175 (to measure about 15 inches), turn. 1st row: 1 s c in 3rd ch from hook, 1 s c in each st of foundation ch (173 s c in all). Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: 1 rib st in each of next 43 s c, * in next s c work 1 s c, ch 2, 1 s c (thus making 2 increases and also forming corner), 1 rib st in each of the next 42 s c, and repeat from * twice, ending row with 2 rib sts in last s c. Ch 2, turn. 3rd to 40th rows incl: * 1 rib st in each st of previous row to within ch-2 (corner), under ch-2 work 1 s c, ch 2, 1 s c. Repeat from * 3 times, ending row with 2 rib sts in last row. In this way, there will be 7 increases in each row (about 442 sts in 40th row). Ch 2, turn.

Lace Edging. 1st row: 1 d c in 1st rib st of previous row, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 d c in next, and repeat from * until 46 sps are made, then ch 1 and in next st (corner) make 3 d c with ch-1 between each d c, and repeat from * to end of row, making 59 sps on each side of front, and 2 sps at each corner (218 sps in entire row). Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: 1 d c in 1st sp, * ch 1, 1 d c in next sp, and repeat from * until 48 sps are made, then ch 1, and in next sp (corner) make 2 d c with ch-1 between, and repeat from * to end of row making 60 sps on each side of front and 1 sp at each corner (221 sps in entire row). Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: 1 s c in 1st sp, 1 s c in d c, 1 s c in sp, 1 s c in d c, ** ch 4, skip 2 sps, 1 d c in next sp, ch 4 (this ch-4 marks center of scallop), skip 1 sp, 1 d c in next, ch 4, skip 2 sps, 1 s c in next d c, * 1 s c in sp, 1 s c in d c, and repeat from * 3 more times (9 s c in group). Then repeat from ** to end of row, arranging work so that ch-4 for center of scallop comes right over corner sp at shoulder point, and 11 s c are worked over the 5 center sps (instead of 4 sps) at the point on center front. End row with 5 s c. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: 1 s c in each of next 3 s c, * ch 6, skip ch-4 loop, 6 d c under next ch-4 loop, ch 6, skip next ch-4 loop and 1st s c, 1 s c in each of the next 7 s c, skip last s c (1 s c on each side of group decreased), and repeat from * to end of row, making 9 s c (instead of 7 s c) over 11 s c group at center front. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: Skip 1st s c, 1 s c in next s c, * ch 6, skip ch-6 loop, 1 d c in 1st d c of 6-dc group, ch 4, skip 1 d c, 1 d c in 3rd d c of same group, ch 4, skip next 2 d c, 1 d c in last d c, ch 6, skip 1st s c of s c group, 1 s c in each of next 5 s c, and repeat from * to end of row, ch 1, turn. 6th row: 1 s c in s c, * ch 6, skip ch-6 of previous row, l d c in d c, 5 d c over ch-4 loop, 5 d c over next ch-4 loop, 1 d c in d c, ch 6, skip 1st s c of 5-sc group, 1 s c in each of next 3 s c, and repeat from * 3 more times. In corner scallop make 7 d c (instead of 5 d c) over each of the ch-4 loops. Then continue as before, making the scallop on each side of center front same as corner scallop already made. Work other side to correspond. Ch 1, turn. 7th row: 1 s c in s c, ** ch 7, skip ch-6, 1 d c in 1st d c of d c group, * 1 ch-4 p, skip 1 d c, 1 d c in next d c, and repeat from * 4 more times (5 sps with p's on each scallop), ch 7, skip ch-6 loop, 1 s c in center s c of 3-sc group, and repeat from ** to end of row, making 7 sps with p's on corner scallops and the two scallops at center front.

Back Opening and Neck Finish: Attach thread to lower end of opening, space evenly s c and ch-4 p's.
