Ch 20, skip 2 sts from hook, 1 half d c in each of next 17 sts, 3 half d c in last st, 17 half d c on opposite side of ch, 3 half d c in ch-2 of corner. 2nd rnd: * 1 half d c over half d c, 2 half d c in next. Repeat from * 18 more times. 3rd rnd: 2 half d c in each of next 3 half d c (at corner), 28 half d c, 2 half d c in each of next 3 half d c (at corner), 28 half d c. 4th rnd: 2 half d c in each of next 3 half d c, 30 half d c, 2 half d c in each of next 3 half d c, 31 half d c. 5th rnd: 2 half d c in each of next 3 half d c, 33 half d c, 2 half d c in each of next 3 half d c, 34 half d c. 6th rnd: 2 half d c in each of next 3 half d c, 36 half d c, 2 half d c in each of next 3 half d c, 37 half d c. 7th rnd: 2 half d c in each of next 3 half d c, 39 half d c, 2 half d c in each of next 3 half d c, 40 half d c. 8th rnd: 2 half d c in each of next 3 half d c, 42 half d c, 2 half d c in each of next 3 half d c, 43 half d c. 9th rnd: 2 half d c in each of next 3 half d c, 45 half d c, 2 half d c in each of next 3 half d c, 45 half d c. 10th rnd: 2 half d c in each of next 5 half d c, 46 half d c, 2 half d c in each of next 5 half d c, 47 half d c. 11th rnd: 2 half d c in each of next 5 half d c, 51 half d c, 2 half d c in each of next 5 half d c, 51 half d c (121 half d c in the rnd). Work even at the ends where increases have been made, and make 2 increases on each long side of work. Then increase enough to keep work flat, until piece measures 10½ inches long, by 9 inches wide (about 290 half d c in rnd). Work 4 rnds even. Mark the center front which will be where the rnd ends. From now on turn at the end of every rnd. 1st decreasing rnd: 7 half d c, decrease in next st and every 15th st around, join rnd with sl st, ch 1, turn. 2nd rnd: 14 half d c, decrease in next st and every 15th st around, join rnd with sl st, ch 1, turn. Repeat 1st decreasing rnd, work 3 rnds even, then decrease in next rnd and every other rnd for 3 times, work 1 more rnd even. There should be about 194 sts in the rnd, and piece should measure about 23½ inches around. Beginning short rows, work 150 sts, turn, skip 1 st, sl st 5, work to within 43 sts from center, turn. Skip 1 st, sl st 5, work to within 2 sts of last row, turn. * Skip 1 st, sl st 2, work to within 2 sts of last row, turn. Repeat from * until there are 46 sts, then * skip 1 st, sl st 5, work to within 5 sts of last row, turn. Repeat from * until there are 14 sts. Work 1 rnd, working over sl sts and sts, turn and work a 2nd rnd. Then with 2 strands of thread work 1 rnd of sl st. On the 11th rnd from center, starting in the back, work 1 rnd of d c, also on the 22nd and 33rd rnds. To do this, fold on the 11th rnd, and work 1 d c in each st. This makes 3 ridges on the crown of the beret.

Bow. Ch 4, 1 s c in 3rd ch, 3 s c in last, ch 2, turn. 2nd row: 1 s c in 1st, 2 s c in next, 1 s c in last, ch 2, turn. 3rd row: 1 s c in each of next 2, 2 s c in next, 1 s c in last, ch 2, turn. Continue to increase at 1 side at beginning and end of every row, always increasing in the 2nd s c from end, until there are 18 sts. Work even for 22 rows, then decrease at both ends twice, with 3 even rows between. Work even on these 14 sts for 12 inches. Then increase at both ends twice with 3 even rows between, work even for 22 rows, decrease 1 st at 1 side every row until 1 st is left. Work a tab of 12 sts for 1½ inches to make center part of bow. Arrange flat bow with tab across middle and attach to center of beret as desired.
