Colorful Scarf Pattern #21

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, Size 30, 4 balls of color 55 Navy, 1 ball color 9 Yellow, and 1 ball color 126 Spanish Red. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 6.

Gauge: 12 sts to 1 inch; 8 rows to 1 inch. The main color is 55 Navy, and the contrasting colored sections are worked separately and joined by sewing.

Navy Section. With Navy, ch 116 for one end. 1st row: 1 half d c in 3rd st from hook and in each st across, ch 2, turn. 2nd row: 1 half d c in each half d c, ch 2, turn. 3rd row: Skip the 1st st, 56 half d c (half way across), ch 2, turn. 4th row: Skip 1st st, half d c across, ch 2, turn. Continue decreasing 1 st at beginning of each row until 1 st is left. Break thread. Skip the center half d c at lower edge, join thread in next st, and work across, ch 2, turn. Decrease 1 st at beginning of every row until 2 sts are left. Break thread. Work another piece to correspond to this one, without breaking thread on side where 2 sts are left. Continue working even on the outside edge, and increasing 1 st at end and beginning of the inside edge rows where the contrasting colored section will be joined. (To increase, work 2 half d c in last st, ch 2, turn and work 2 half d c in 1st st.) Increase until there are 57 half d c across. Work even for 11 inches. On next row begin to decrease on same side where the increases were made, keeping the same edge even. (To decrease, skip the 2nd st from end, work the end st, ch 2, turn, and skip the 1st st on next row.) Continue decreasing in this manner until 2 sts are left. Break off, leaving a piece of thread for use in joining to point of first piece where 2 sts were left.

Red and Yellow Section. With Yellow, ch 3, 2 half d c in 2nd ch from hook, ch 2, turn. 2nd row: 1 half d c in each st, 2 half d c in 2nd ch from hook, ch 2, turn. 3rd row: 2 half d c in 1st st, 1 half d c in each st across. Continue working even on one side, and increasing 1 st at end and beginning of each row on the other edge, until there are 55 half d c across. From now on, decrease 1 st at beginning of every row, working 5 more rows in Yellow, 4 rows in Red, 6 rows in Yellow, 6 rows in Red, 2 rows in Yellow (32 half d c across). Work over 15 half d c, always decreasing the 1st st of each row until 1 st is left. Break off. Skip the center st, join thread on next, and work other point to correspond.

Diamond in Red. With Red, ch 3, 2 half d c in 2nd ch from hook, ch 2, turn. Increase 1 st at beginning of each row until there are 15 half d c across. Then decrease 1 st at beginning of each row until 1 st is left. Break off. Sew the diamond between the two yellow points, and then sew this large point between the two blue points, and join the diagonals. Then work another contrasting colored section, inverting the color scheme, and join in same way.
