MATERIALS:
CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, size 50,
Small Ball:
Clark's O.N.T.—17 balls of White or Ecru, or 24 balls of any color,
or
J. & P. Coats—12 balls of White or Ecru, or 17 balls of any color.
Big Ball:
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats—7 balls of White or Ecru.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 12.

This amount is sufficient for a luncheon set, consisting of 4 place mats, each 10½ x 16½ inches; and a center mat, 13½ x 29 inches.

GAUGE: Each motif measures (before blocking) 2⅛ inches from point to opposite point across center.

PLACE MATS (Make 4) … First Motif … Starting at center, ch 8. Join with sl st. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 23 d c in ring. Join with sl st to top of ch-3. 2nd rnd: Ch 4, tr in next 3 sts holding back on hook the last loop of each tr, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (a cluster made); * ch 6, tr in same place as last tr of previous cluster and in next 3 sts holding back on hook the last loop of each tr and complete cluster as before. Repeat from * around, making last tr of last cluster at base of ch-4 first made and ending with ch 6, sl st at tip of 1st cluster. 3rd rnd: Sl st to 3rd st of next ch-6, s c in sp, * ch 7, make a 4-tr cluster in tip of next cluster, ch 7, s c in next sp. Repeat from * around ending with ch 3, tr in 1st s c made. 4th rnd: S c in sp, * ch 5, s c in next sp, ch 10, s c in next sp. Repeat from * around ending with ch 10, sl st in 1st s c made. 5th rnd: * 5 s c in next sp, in next ch-10 loop make (5 s c, ch 5) 3 times and 5 s c. Repeat from * around. Sl st in 1st s c made. Fasten off.

Second Motif … Work as for First Motif to 4th rnd incl. 5th rnd: 5 s c in next sp, in next sp make 5 s c, ch 5, 5 s c and ch 2; s c in corresponding p of previous motif, ch 2, make 5 s c, ch 5 and 5 s c in same sp on motif in work and complete rnd as for First Motif. Make 5 x 8 motifs in all, joining adjacent motifs as Second Motif was joined to First, having 1 free ch-10 loop between joinings on each motif.

FILL-IN MOTIF … Work as for Motif, until 1st cluster on 2nd rnd is completed. * Ch 5, s c in free p on motif preceding joining, ch 5, s c in 1st free p on next motif (following joining), ch 5 and make next cluster on Fill-In Motif, ch 2, skip 1 free p on motif, s c in next (center) free p, ch 2, work next cluster on Fill-In Motif. Repeat from * around ending with sl st in tip of 1st cluster made. Fasten off. Fill in all spaces between motifs in this manner.

RUNNER … Make 6 x 13 motifs, joining them as for Place Mats.
