MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 6 balls of Ecru to be referred to as "A," 5 balls of Blue to be referred to as "B," and 2 balls of Orange to be referred to as "C."
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 8 or 9.

The above amount of materials is sufficient for a luncheon set consisting of 4 place mats, each about 10½ x 15½ inches (7 x 5 patterns); and a center mat about 10½ x 25 inches (7 x 16 patterns).

GAUGE: 11 sts make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

PLACE MATS (Make 4) … Starting at long side, with color A ch 173 (to measure about 16 inches). 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in next ch, leaving the last 2 loops on hook, drop A, attach color C and draw through 2 loops. Then, holding A along top of foundation chain, make d c in next 2 ch (thus concealing A); d c in next ch, leaving the last 2 loops on hook, * drop C, pick up A and draw through 2 loops, d c in next 20 ch (concealing C along top of ch), d c in next ch, leaving the last 2 loops on hook, drop A, pick up C and draw through 2 loops, d c in next 2 ch, d c in next ch, leaving the last 2 loops on hook. Repeat from * across, ending with 21 A d c in last 21 ch (171 d c, counting turning ch-3 as 1 d c). Ch 3, turn. Hereafter work as follows, changing colors and concealing unused color, or colors along top of previous rows. Any color not to be used on entire row can be broken off and attached again on rows where pattern calls for same.
   2nd row: 5 A d c, * 15 B d c, 9 A d c. Repeat from * across, ending with 6 A d c. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: 2 A d c, * 6 B d c, 9 A d c, 6 B d c, 3 A d c. Repeat from * across, ending with 3 A d c. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: 2 A dc, * 3 B d c, 3 A d c, 3 C d c, 9 A d c, 3 B d c, 3 A d c. Repeat from * across, ending with 3 A d c. Ch 3, turn. 5th row: 2 A d c, * 3 B d c, 6 A d c, 9 C d c, 3 B d c, 3 A d c. Repeat from * across, ending with 3 A d c. Ch 3, turn. 6th row: Same as 4th row. 7th row: Same as 3rd row. 8th row: Same as 2nd row. 9th row: 2 A d c, * 3 C d c, 21 A d c. Repeat from * across, ending with 21 A d c. The 2nd to 9th rows inclusive constitute the pattern. Repeat pattern 4 more times. Fasten off.

CENTER MAT … Starting at short side, with A ch 173. Work exactly as for Place Mats, until 16 patterns have been completed. Fasten off. Block to measurements given.
