Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen or Clark's O.N.T. Cronita, 2 balls of color 78 Turquoise or any desired color. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4. A 6-inch composition white handle. Lining material.
This bag is started with a ring at center, worked around and around into a flat hexagon, then folded over.
To begin, ch 6, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Work 12 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: * 1 s c in 1st s c, ch 2, 1 s c in same s c as last s c (an increase), 1 s c in next s c, repeat from * around (6 increasing points and 6 sections of 3 s c each). Put colored thread to mark where rnd is completed. 3rd rnd: * S c under ch-2, ch 2, s c under same ch-2, skip next s c, s c in each of next 2 s c, repeat from * around (4 s c in each section). 4th rnd: Same as 3rd rnd, having 5 s c in each section. 5th rnd: * S c under ch-2, ch 2, s c under same ch-2, skip 1 s c, s c in next s c, make a pc st in next s c, (to make a pc st, ch 1, 5 d c in next st, drop st from hook, insert hook back in ch-1 and draw loop through the one on hook) s c in next s c, s c under ch-2, ch 2, s c under same ch, skip 1 s c, s c in each of next 3 s c, 2 s c with ch 2 between under next ch-2, skip 1 s c in each of next 3 s c, repeat from * around. (There will be 2 pc st sections and 4 s c sections). 6th rnd: * 2 s c with ch 2 between under next ch-2, skip 1 s c, s c in each of next 4 sts, (counting as one st the ch-1 that completed the pc st) repeat from * around (6 s c in each section). 7th rnd: * 2 s c with ch 2 between under next ch-2, skip 1 s c, s c in each of next 5 s c, repeat from * around (7 s c in each section). 8th rnd: * 2 s c with ch 2 between under next ch-2, skip 1 s c, s c in next s c, pc st in next s c, s c in each of next 2 s c, pc st in next s c, s c in next s c, 2 s c with ch 2 between under next ch-2, skip 1 s c, s c in each of next 6 s c, 2 s c with ch 2 between under next ch-2, skip 1 s c, s c in each of next 6 s c, repeat from * around (8 s c in each section). 9th and 10th rnds: Same as 6th and 7th rnds, having 9 s c in each section in the 9th rnd, and 10 s c in the 10th rnd. 11th rnd: * 2 s c with ch-2 between under next ch-2, skip 1 s c, s c in next s c, pc st in next s c, s c in each of next 2 s c, pc st in next s c, s c in each of next 2 s c, pc st in next s c, s c in next s c, 2 s c with ch 2 between under next ch-2, skip 1st s c, s c in each of next 9 s c, 2 s c with ch 2 between under next ch-2, skip 1 s c, s c in each of next 9 s c, repeat from * around (11 s c in each section).
Work in this manner of making 2 rnds of s c and 1 rnd with pc sts, thus making 1 additional s c in each rnd and making 1 additional pc st (in pc st sections) in every pc st rnd, until there are 14 pc sts in a pc st section. Then work 2 rnds of s cs as usual. Break off.
Fold work as in illustration and sew sides together, leaving 2 inches open at top edge. Then work across edge of center section (edge to be sewed to handle) a row of pc sts, making a pc st in 1st s c, * s c in each of next 2 s c, pc st in next s c, repeat from * across top. Break off. Finish other side of bag the same way. Line bag, having upper edge of lining at bottom edge of pc sts. Sew on composition white handle.
Handle Straps: Make a chain about 15 inches long. Turn and work a row of s c along chain and fasten off. Make another strap. Sew straps in handle.
