Turban Pattern #2173

Headsize 22

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Boucle, 5 balls of color 540 Autumn Glow and 1 ball of 721 White Ivory. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 3. A tapestry needle (large eye).

Crown. With Autumn Glow, ch 3, join with sl st to form ring. Ch 1. 1st rnd: 6 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c, thus increasing. 3rd rnd: * S c in next s c, 2 s c in next, repeat from * around. 4th and subsequent rnds: Work s c in each s c of previous rnd, making 6 increases in each rnd at equal intervals, but not one increase over another increase of previous rnd, until work measures 3 inches in radius (from center ring to edge of work). Continue making s c in each s c until crown measures 6 inches from center ring to edge of work. (In the meantime, if a larger or a smaller headsize is desired, increase or decrease sts as maybe necessary.) Break off.

Band. With Autumn Glow, ch 32, turn. 1st row: D c in 3rd ch from hook and d c in each ch across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: D c in each st of previous row. Ch 3, turn. Repeat 2nd row until band measures 35 inches. Break off.

Before joining band to crown, block band on an ironing board, using a damp cloth and a moderately hot iron. For best results, use a hat block to block the crown; or, fold crown in half, and press same as band, making an effort to avoid a crease at sides. Thread tapestry needle with White Ivory. Starting at beginning of 1st row of band, work a running stitch over 1st d c, under 2nd d c, over next d c, etc. across the 1st row. Run thread along edge to 3rd row and work same as 1st row. Continue this way, working only into every other row of band. Mark center of long edge on band. Try crown on, then place center of band 1½ inches to left of center front on crown. Twist band a complete turn at this mark and tie once at back. Sew upper and lower edges of band to crown as in illustration. Tack ends to crown.
