Headsize 22

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Boucle, 2 balls of color 204 Yellow or any color desired. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 2. 1 yd. grosgrain ribbon, 1 inch wide.

This hat is made in a flat piece and then two sides are sewed together.

To begin, ch 20, turn. 1st row: 1 half d c in 3rd ch from hook, 1 half d c in each ch across (18 half d c). Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: 1 half d c in each half d c across, hereafter always picking up only the back loop of each half d c. Ch 7, turn. 3rd row: 1 half d c in 3rd ch from hook, 1 half d c in each of next 4 ch, and 1 half d c in each half d c across (23 half d c). Ch 3, turn. 4th to 23rd rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately (thus all the increases coming on same edge and keeping other edge straight). There will be 68 half d c on 23rd row. 24th to 40th rows incl: Work straight. 41st row: Beginning at end with the increases (opposite straight edge), sl st over first 6 half d c, ch 2, work half d c across, turn. 42nd row: Sl st over first 3 half d c (this is at straight edge), ch 1, work half d c across, ch 2, turn. 43rd row: 1 half d c in each half d c, turn. 44th to 72nd rows incl: Repeat the last 2 rows alternately, thus decreasing at the straight edge which is lower edge of hat. Break off.

To block, lay out flat on ironing board, pin in place, use a damp cloth and a moderately hot iron and press carefully stretching work to measure your headsize. Allow to dry thoroughly.

Fold work in half along the 31st row, place foundation ch along the edges of last several rows and sew up seam all the way across and along the short end (seam comes at back of hat). Then work 4 rows of s c around bottom edge, easing in work if necessary to adjust to your own headsize. Turn under a 1 inch hem at bottom. Tuck in about 2 inches at top and tack down. Fold ribbon as in illustration and sew to top of hat, 2½ inches from back seam.
