Italian Table Mats Pattern #71

Materials: (4 mats) Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, Size 10, 2 balls each of color 126 Spanish Red, Ecru, 106 Sport Green, 38 Dark Orange, and 12 Black; or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, Size 10, 2 balls of 126 Spanish Red and Ecru, and 1 ball each of 106 Sport Green, 38 Dark Orange and 12 Black. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 6 or 7. ⅓ yard of natural color linen.

The above amount of thread is sufficient for 4 mats, each about 13½ x 10½ inches.

Mat: Cut linen 8 by 12 inches. Make a narrow hem. Attach Spanish Red along 1 edge. Make s c over hem, * ch 1, s c over hem, repeat from * making s c's about ⅛ inch apart. At corners make 3 s c in same sp, with ch 1 between. Ch 1 and join with sl st to 1st st, ch 1. 2nd row: * S c over ch-1, ch 1, and repeat from * around. At corners ch 3 in­stead of ch 1. Join with sl st to 1st st of row, ch 1. 3rd row: * S c over ch-1, ch 1, and repeat from * around. At corners make 3 s c's with ch 1 between, over ch-3 loop. Alternate 2nd and 3rd rows for entire mat.

The color pattern is as follows: 3 rows of Spanish Red, 1 row of Ecru, 3 rows of Sport Green, 1 row of Ecru, 3 rows of Dark Orange, 1 row of Ecru, 3 rows of Black, 1 row of Ecru. The mat is finished with a row of Spanish Red making a group of 5 picots around the corners if desired.
