Festival Tablecloth Pattern #7003

Materials:
Choose one of the following threads in White or Ecru:
Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, size 50, 19 balls.
J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, size 50, 14 balls.
J. & P. Coats Big Ball, size 50, 8 balls.
Clark's Big Ball, size 50, 7 balls.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 12 or 13.
2 yards of 72-inch width White Italian Linen.

When completed, tablecloth measures about 60 x 70 inches, and each napkin about 16 inches square.

Cut linen into 6 blocks, each 18 inches square, and 3 blocks, each 18 inches x 28 inches (these to be joined later with an insertion to make cloth), and 4 napkins, each 15½ inches square. Make a ¼ hem all around each piece.

Cloth Insertion: Ch 11, turn. 1 tr in 1st ch of ch-11, ch 11, turn. * 1 tr in 6th ch of ch-11, ch 11, turn. Repeat from * for length required. Sew insertions between blocks as in illustration, with over and over stitches.

Edging: Ch 51, turn. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each of next 17 ch, ch 3, turn. 2nd (short) row: D c in each of next 3 d c, (ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in next d c) 4 times, d c in each of next 3 sts, ch 3, turn, (turning ch 3 always counts as 1 d c on next row). 3rd row: D c in each of next 3 d c, sp over each of next 4 sps, d c in each of next 2 d c, ch 3, sl st in next st, (ch 5, skip 5 ch of ch-51, tr in next ch) 5 times, ch 10, turn. 4th row: Tr in next tr, (ch 5, tr in next tr) 3 times, ch 5, d c in 1st st of short row, d c in each of next 3 d c, make 4 sps, d c in each of next 3 d c, ch 14, turn. 5th (short) row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each of next 10 ch sts, d c in each of next 4 d c, 4 sps, d c in each of next 3 d c, d c in each of 12 sts, ch 3, turn. 6th (short) row: D c in each of next 3 d c, (ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in next d c) 4 times, 4 sps, (ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in next d c) 4 times, d c in each of next 3 d c. Ch 3, turn. 7th row: D c in each of next 3 d c, sp over sp (12 in all), d c in each of next 2 d c, ch 3, sl st in next st, (ch 5, tr in next tr) twice, ch 5, skip 5 ch of turning ch-10, tr in next ch. Ch 10, turn. 8th row: Tr in next tr, ch 5, tr in next tr, ch 5, d c in 1st st of short row, d c in each of next 3 d c, 5 sps, 2 d c in next sp, d c in next d c, 2 d c in next sp, d c in next d c (2 bls made), 5 sps, 3 d c. Ch 3, turn. 9th (short) row: 3 d c, 5 sps, 2 bls, 5 sps, 3 d c, ch 3, turn. 10th (short) row: 3 d c, 4 sps, 2 d c in next sp, d c in each of next 7 d c, 2 d c in next sp, d c in next d c, 4 sps, 3 d c, ch 3, turn. 11th row: 3 d c, 2 sps, 1 bl, 1 sp, d c in each d c of d c-group, 1 sp, 1 bl, 2 sps, 2 d c, ch 3, sl st in next st, (ch 5, tr in next tr) twice, ch 5, tr in 6th ch of turning ch-10. Ch 10, turn. 12th row: Tr in next tr, 5 tr in next sp, tr in next tr, ch 5, d c in 1st st of short row, 3 d c, 4 sps, d c in each d c of d c-group, 4 sps, 3 d c, ch 3, turn. 13th (short) row: 3 d c, 2 sps, 2 bls, d c in each of next 3 d c of group (3 bls in all), ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in next, ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in each of next 4 d c, 2 bls, 2 sps, 3 d c, ch 3, turn.

Work thusly following chart until 24 rows in all are completed. Turn and sl st over the first 12 d c. 25th (short) row: Ch 3, d c in each of next 3 d c, 4 sps, 3 d c, ch 3, turn. 26th (short) row: 3 d c, 4 sps, 4 d c, ch 3, turn. 27th row: 3 d c, 4 sps, 2 d c, ch 3, sl st in next st, ch 5, skip 5 d c of 24th row, tr in next d c, ch 5, skip next 5 d c of that row, tr in next d c, ch 5, tr in next tr, ch 5, tr in next tr, ch 5, skip 5 ch of turning ch, tr in next ch. Ch 10, turn. 28th row: Tr in next tr, (ch 5, tr in next tr) 3 times, ch 5, d c in 1st d c of short row, d c in each d c and 2 d c in each sp, across. This completes motif. Break off thread. Attach thread to 6th ch st of turning ch-10 of 28th row, and work lace as follows: 1st row: Ch 10, tr in next tr, (ch 5, tr in next tr) 3 times, ch 5, tr in 1st d c, (ch 5, skip 5 d c, tr in next d c) 3 times, ch 10, turn. 2nd row: Tr in 6th ch from hook, and tr in each of next 4 ch, tr in next tr, (ch 5, tr in next tr) 6 times, 5 tr in next sp, tr in next tr, ch 5, tr in 5th ch of turning ch-10. Ch 10, turn.

Follow chart for the 3rd, 4th and 5th rows. Then start from beginning of motif. Repeat motif and lace thus alternating them for the length of cloth, then follow chart for corner. Break off thread, and attach to side of corner and continue to make motifs and lace alternately for other side of cloth. Work thus all around. Sew edging to cloth with over and over stitches.

Napkins. Make a row of sps all around 4 sides of napkins as follows: 1st row: Attach thread to one corner, ch 12, tr in same place as thread was joined. Ch 4, * tr in edge of napkin ¼ inch away from tr just made, ch 4, repeat from * around, making 2 tr with ch 8 between at each corner. Join last ch 4 to 4th st of ch-12 first made. There should be an even number of sps on each side, not counting corner sps. 2nd row: 4 s c in corner sp, sl st in center ch of same corner, ch 4, 5 tr in same sp, * ch 4, sl st in next tr, 4 s c in next sp, sl st in next tr, ch 4, 5 tr in next sp, repeat from * around and break off.
