MATERIALS—Lily Rug Yarn, Art. 241:—1½-sks. Brown and 1-sk. Dark Green; Lily Pearl Cotton size 5:—1-ball Golden Brown. Crochet hook size 0.

FRONT—In Brown, ch 26, sc in 2d ch from hook, (sk next 3 ch, 7 dc in next ch, sk next 3 ch, sc in next ch) 3 times. The right side of shell rows is right side of holder. ROW 2—Ch 1, turn, sl st in each st of last row. ROW 3—Ch 4, turn, 7 dc in top lp of last sl st, (sk 3 sts, sc in top lp of next sl st, sk 3 sts, 7 dc in top lp of next sl st) 3 times. Tr in same end st. Repeat Row 2 across to end ch-4. ROW 5—Ch 5, turn, 3 dc in top lp of last sl st, sk 3 sts, sc in top lp of next sl st (a starting half-shell made). (Sk 3 sts, 7 dc in top lp of next sl st, sk 3 sts, sc in top lp of next sl st) 3 times (3 shells made). Sk 3 sts, 3 dc and 1 tr in next sl st (ending half-shell made). ROW 6—Repeat Row 2 across to end ch-5. ROW 7—Ch 1, turn, sc in last sl st. Make 4 shells across. Repeat Rows 2, 5, 6 and 7 three times and Row 2 again. ROW 21—Repeat Row 5 but make only 2 dc in starting halfshell and 2 dc and 1 tr in ending halfshell. Repeat Row 6. ROW 23—Ch 3, turn, dc in last 4 sl sts, sk 3 sts, sc in next sl st. Make 2 shells across. Sk 3 sts, dc in next 4 sl sts. ROW 24—Repeat Row 2 across to end dc. Do not make sl st in end ch-3. ROW 25—Ch 1, turn, sl st in last sl st, ch 3, dc in next 4 sl sts, sk 3 sts, sc in next sl st. Make 1 shell. Sk 3 sts, dc in next 5 sl sts. ROW 26—Repeat Row 24. ROW 27—Ch 1, turn, sc in last sl st. Make 2 shells across. Repeat Row 2. ROW 29—Ch 1, turn, sc in last sl st, ch 2, sk 3 sts, sc in next sl st. Make 1 shell. Ch 2, sk 3 sts, sl st in end sl st. Fasten off.

PALM—Repeat thru Row 8. ROW 9—Ch 5, turn, 3 dc in last sl st, sk 3 sts, sc in next sl st, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, 4 dc in next, dc in next, hdc in 2 sts, sc in next. Make 2 shells and a half-shell. ROW 10—Ch 1, turn, sl st across half-shell and 2 shells. Ch 9, sk 10 sts on front of thumb gusset, sl st in remaining 5 sts to end ch-5. ROW 11—Ch 1, turn, sc in last sl st, sk 3 sts, 7 dc in next sl st, sc in center st of ch-9, sk remainder of ch, 7 dc in next sl st, sk 3 sts, sc in next sl st. Complete row with 2 shells. Repeat Rows 2, 5, 6 and 7 twice and Row 2 again. Repeat Front beg. at Row 21.

THUMB—Make sc in 10 sts on front of gusset, sc in 9 ch across back edge. Sc in each sc around and around for 2 rows more. Decrease 4 sts evenly in next row. Make 5 rows even. Decrease every other st until 5 sc are left. Cut and weave end tog. Using 2 strands of Golden Brown, make a large French Knot lengthwise of center dc in each shell on both pieces. Lay 2 halves backs tog. and sew tog. beginning at Row 4 on each side, leaving top open. STEM—In Green, ch 20, sk last ch, sc in next 2 ch, hdc in 9 ch, (2 hdc in next ch, 1 hdc in next) 4 times. Fasten off. PINE NEEDLES—Starting at top, make Green chains:—13-ch, two 16-chs, 13-ch, 16-ch, 19-ch, 22-ch, 19-ch, 17-ch and 16-ch. Sew needles and stem in place as in illustration. Steam and press dry thru a cloth. Line with flannel.
