MATERIALS: J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Pearl Cotton, Size 5, 4 balls of Beauty Rose and 2 balls of White ... Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Crochet Hook No. 3.

GAUGE: 2½ group sts make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

Use three threads throughout.

Starting at bottom with White, make a chain 7 inches long (3½ sts to 1 inch). 1st row: In 2nd ch from hook make sc and half dc (group st made), * skip next ch, sc and half dc in next ch (another group st made). Repeat from * across until row measures 5½ inches. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Make a group st in each sc. Break off. This row constitutes pattern. 3rd row: Turn. Attach Rose to first sc and make a group st in same place and in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Work in pattern, alternating colors every 2 rows until piece measures 5 inches, ending with a White row. Now work in rnds as follows: 1st rnd: With Rose, make group sts all around outer edges. Join with sl st to first sc. 2nd rnd: Make a group st in each sc around, increasing at corners to keep work flat—to inc a group st, make a group st in both the sc and the half dc of group st. Join. 3rd rnd: Make a group st in each sc across to corner, ch 25, sl st in first ch made (loop formed), and continue making group sts around as before. Join and break off.
