MATERIALS:
J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 4 balls of a dark color and 1 ball of a light color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8.
3 small buttons.

Gauge: 17 half d c make 2 inches.

Back … Starting at bottom, with dark color make a chain 15 inches long (about 9 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: Half d c in 3rd ch from hook, half d c in each ch across until 108 half d c are made, counting turning ch-2 as 1 half d c. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: Picking up extreme back loop, make half d c in each st across, ending with half d c in turning ch (double ridge is wrong side of work). Draw light color through dark color loop, drop dark color, turn. 3rd row: With light color, working through both back loops, s c in each half d c across. Ch 1, drop light color. 4th row: Draw dark color through 1st light s c made (do not pull work), ch 2, half d c in each s c across. Ch 2, turn. 5th row: Same as 2nd row; drop dark color at end of row, pick up light color, ch 2, sl st in end st of 5th row, ch 1. 6th, 7th and 8th rows: Repeat 3rd, 4th and 2nd rows. Continue in this manner (2 rows of dark half d c alternated by 1 row of light s c), until piece measures 10 inches, ending with light color row.

To Shape Armholes … Pick up dark color, sl st across 7 sts, work across to within 7 sts from end of row, turn. Dec. 2 sts—by working off 2 sts as 1 st twice, 1 st in from edge—at both ends of each of next 2 dark rows (11 sts decreased at each edge). Work without decreasing until piece measures 5 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, dec. 5 half d c at both ends of each dark row 5 times—by working sl st across 1st 5 sts and omitting last 5 sts (25 sts decreased on each shoulder). Fasten off.

Front … Work exactly as for Back until piece measures 1¼ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, ending with a light row. Next row: Divide row exactly in half (43 sts on each side) and mark center with a colored thread. Work in pattern to colored thread, turn. Work back and forth over this section only for 3 inches, ending at center front edge with light color. On next row, sl st across 1st 15 sts at center front edge. With dark color, work in pattern across, working off last 2 sts at neck edge as 1 st. Ch 2, turn. Following row: Work off 1st 2 sts as 1 st, continue across, turn. Continuing in pattern, dec. 1 more st at neck shaping in same manner but, when piece measures 5 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, shape shoulder to correspond with shoulder shaping of Back. Fasten off. Attach thread at base of center front opening, and work other side to correspond.

Sleeves … Starting at bottom, make a chain 12 inches long. 1st row: Work in pattern until 76 d c are made. Cut off remaining chain. Work in pattern, increasing 1 half d c at both ends of next row and one row every ¾ inch thereafter until 4 increases are made at each edge—to inc., work 2 sts in 1 st. Work in pattern until piece measures 3¾ inches. To shape top of sleeve, on next row sl st across 1st 7 sts, work across to within last 7 sts, turn. Then dec. 2 sts at both ends of each of next 8 dark rows—to dec., work off first 2 half d c as 1 st, and following 2 as 1 st. Work other end of row to correspond. Fasten off.

Collar … Starting at inner edge, with dark color make a chain 15 inches long. 1st row: Half d c in 3rd ch from hook, half d c in each ch across until 94 half d c are made, counting turning ch-2 as 1 d c. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: Half d c in each st across. Ch 2, turn. 3rd to 7th rows incl: Half d c in each st across, making 6 increases at equal distances apart, but do not increase at edges (124 sts)—to inc. 1 half d c, work 2 half d c in 1 st. Then work 1 row without increasing. Fasten off.

Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Attach dark color at left side of center front opening, s c across edge to next light row, ch 5, turn; sl st in 2nd s c made, turn; sl st in each of 5 ch, s c in center front edge (a buttonloop). Keeping work flat, continue to make s c along both sides of center front opening, making 2 more buttonloops at equal distances apart on left side. Fasten off. Sew collar in place. Sew on buttons.
