Gauge: 4 shells make 1 inch; 6 rows make 1 inch.

Back … Starting at waistline, ch 181 to measure about 15 inches. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, ch 3, s c in same ch, * skip 2 ch, 2 d c in next ch, ch 3, s c in same ch. Repeat from * across (60 shells). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: D c in ch-3 of 1st shell, ch 3, s c in same place, * 2 d c in ch-3 of next shell, ch 3, s c in same place. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 2nd row for 5 inches.

To Shape Armholes … Sl st across 1st 3 shells, work in pattern to within 3 shells from end of row. Ch 3, turn. Now dec. the 2nd and next to the last shells on every other row until 50 shells remain—to dec. a shell, complete 1st shell, make s c in ch-3 of next shell, 2 d c in ch-3 of following shell, and continue in pattern across, decreasing shell at end of row in the same way. Work without decreasing until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, sl st across 1st 2 shells; work in pattern across. Repeat last row until 22 shells remain. Fasten off.

Right Front … Starting at waistline, ch 157 to measure about 13½ inches and work in pattern as for Back (52 shells) for 3 rows. Ch 4, turn. 4th row: 2 tr in ch-3 of shell, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook (a 3-tr cluster made, counting turning ch-4 as 1 tr); * ch 3, 3 tr in ch-3 of next shell, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook. Repeat from * across. (This side of work is right side.) Ch 3, turn. 5th row: D c in tip of next cluster, ch 3, s c in same place, * 2 d c in tip of next cluster, ch 3, s c in same place. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 6th to 9th rows incl: Shell over shell, decreasing the 2nd shell from underarm edge on the 6th and 8th rows. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the last 6 rows (4th to 9th rows incl.) until piece measures 5 inches in all, ending with 9th row (44 shells).

To Shape Armhole … Starting at center front edge, work in pattern across to within last 4 shells, turn. 2nd row: Sl st across 1st 3 clusters and continue in pattern across. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Work in pattern to within last shell, d c in last shell, turn. 4th row: Sl st across 1st shell and continue across. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 3rd and 4th rows until 30 shells remain (do not dec. on cluster row). Fasten off.

Left Front … Work to correspond with Right Front, reversing shapings. Sew up underarm seams.

Right Front Panel and Yoke … Starting at bottom, ch 73 to measure about 6½ inches and work in pattern (24 shells), decreasing the 2nd shell in from one end only every 4th row until 18 shells remain. On next row, starting at center front edge (the straight edge), complete the 1st 2 shells, s c in 2nd d c of 2nd shell made, ch 4, skip 1 shell, s c in ch-3 of next shell, shell in ch-3 of next shell and continue across. On next row, work in pattern across shells and across ch-4 (18 shells—a buttonhole completed). Continue in pattern, decreasing the 2nd shell at decrease edge every 2½ inches thereafter 6 times in all (12 shells), at the same time making a buttonhole every 2 inches. Work without decreasing until piece measures 24½ inches, ending at decrease edge. Ch 44, turn. Work in pattern across chain and across row (26 shells). Work without decreasing until the 12th buttonhole is completed. Work another ½ inch. Then, starting at front edge, sl st across 1st 5 shells (thus starting neck shaping) and work in pattern across. Continue in pattern, decreasing the 2nd shell in from neck edge on each row until 14 shells remain but, when piece measures 3¼ inches from the ch-44, shape shoulder by decreasing 2 shells each row at extension edge 6 times. Fasten off.

Left Front Panel and Yoke … Work as for Right Front Panel and Yoke, omitting buttonholes.

Skirt … Starting at bottom, make a chain 2 yds. long and work as for Back until row measures 58 inches (232 shells). Continue in pattern, decreasing 6 shells at equal distances apart on every 4th row until 100 shells remain. Then dec. 4 shells at equal distances apart on next decrease-row (96 shells). Work without decreasing until piece measures 17½". Fasten off.

Sleeves … Starting at bottom, ch 73 to measure about 6½ inches and work in pattern across as for Back (24 shells). Ch 13, turn. Work in pattern across chain and across row. Ch 13, turn. Repeat the last row once more (32 shells). Ch 10, turn. Continue in pattern, increasing 3 shells (instead of 4 shells) at end of each row until there are 92 shells in the row. Work without increasing for 11½ inches. To shape top of sleeve, sl st across 1st 8 shells and continue in pattern across. Repeat this last row until 28 shells remain. At beginning of each of next 2 rows, sl st across 1st 4 shells (20 shells remain). Fasten off.

Sleeve Bands (Make 2) … Ch 121 to measure about 9½" and work in pattern for ½". Fasten off.

Collar … Starting at neck edge, ch 169 to measure about 14 inches. Work in pattern, increasing 1 shell at both ends of every 4th row, making increases over the 2nd shell from each end, 3 times in all. Work without increasing until piece measures 2½". Fasten off.

Sew up underarm seams. Sew skirt to waistline. Sew front panels and yoke in place, easing in the extra fullness of front to yoke. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in, easing in the extra fullness across top of sleeve. Gather bottom of sleeve to fit sleeve band, and sew neatly together. Sew collar around neck edge, having both front edges extend 1 inch beyond edge of collar. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Run narrow ribbon through 4th row of openwork at both sides of Front, and sew ends on wrong side. Cut two 1 yd. pieces of wide ribbon, and gather one end of each piece. Sew to waistline at panel, and tie ends at back. Make a bow with remaining ribbon, and sew to center front at neck edge.
