Double Triangle Scarf Pattern #41

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Knitting & Crochet Cotton, 3 balls of main color (referred to as "A" in instructions) and 1 ball of contrasting color (referred to as "B") for trimming. (There will be enough of the main color left to make a pair of gauntlet cuffs to match.) Milward's steel crochet hook No. 3.

   Cut pattern for a guide, as follows: On a piece of smooth wrapping paper 18 inches square, measure in from the lower left-hand corner 3 inches and make a mark. Then draw a line with a ruler from the upper left-hand corner to this mark. Then measure to the right 2 inches, and from this mark draw a line to the lower right-hand corner. Cut on these lines and use the resulting triangular pattern as a guide. The bottom side of the scarf measures about 17½ inches, and the long slanting side reaches from the back of the neck across the front and attaches to the tie end. To begin, make ch 17½ inches long, using color A. 1st row: 1 s c in 7th ch from hook, * ch 3, skip 2 sts of foundation ch, 1 s c in next, and repeat from * to end of ch. Ch 4, turn. ** 2nd row: 1 d c in 1st ch-3 loop, * ch 3, 1 d c in same loop, 1 d c in next loop, and repeat from * to end of row, ending with 2 d c with ch-3 between in last loop. Ch 4, turn. 3rd row: 1 s c in 1st ch-3 sp, * ch 3, 1 s c in next ch-3 sp, and repeat from * to end of row. Ch 4, turn. 4th row: Same as 2nd row. 5th row: Attach color B, ch 4, turn, and work as for 3rd row. 6th row: 1 s c in 1st ch-3 loop, * ch 3, 1 s c in next loop, and repeat from * to end of row, ending with 2 s c with ch-3 between in last loop. Break off. 7th row: Take up color A again, ch 4, turn, and repeat from ** 3 more times, shaping scarf by decreasing on one side to correspond with pattern (you will have 4 stripes of color B). From here on, work with color A only, repeating rows 2 and 3 alternately, until scarf fits pattern size. Break off.

TIE END. Attach color A to straight end of triangle, and work a tie approximately 13½ inches long. If desired, one or more stripes in color B may be introduced in the tie end.
   A row of d c worked around the edge of entire triangle will straighten out any existing irregularities.
   Make another scarf and tie end, then attach the two scarfs, having the pointed ends overlap one another about 2 inches in the back.
