Sectional Draped Hat Pattern #24

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Knitting & Crochet Cotton, 1 ball. (Or Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercer­ized Crochet Size 10 White or Ecru, 3 balls.) Milward's steel crochet hook No. 3.

   This hat is made up of 5 sections and a headband. These are afterwards crocheted together and draped to suit. For a 22 inch headsize, each section should measure about 4¼ inches across the bottom and about 5¼ inches deep.

SECTION. To begin, ch 35 (to measure about 4¼ inches), turn. 1st row: 1 half d c in 4th ch from hook, 1 half d c in each st of foundation ch. Ch 2, turn. ** 2nd row: 1 half d c in each st of previous row. Ch 2, turn. 3rd row: Same as 2nd row. Ch 4, turn. 4th row: 1 s c in 3rd st of previous row, * ch 3, skip 2 sts, 1 s c in next, and repeat from * to end of row (11 loops in all). Ch 2, turn. 5th row: * 2 half d c in ch-3 loop, 1 half d c in s c, and repeat from * to end of row. Ch 2, turn. 6th to 13th rows incl: Repeat from ** (the be­ginning of 2nd row) twice. 14th row: Decrease 2 sts (one at beginning and one at end of each row) by working off 2 sts together. Ch 2, turn. 15th to 17th rows incl: No decreases. 1 half d c in each st of pre­vious row. Ch 2, turn. 18th to 20th rows incl: Same as 14th row. 21st to 26th rows incl: Decrease 3 sts (one at beginning by working off 2 sts together, and two at end of row by working off last 3 sts together). There will be 6 sts left in the last row.

HEADBAND. Ch 20, turn. 1st row: 1 half d c in 4th ch from hook, 1 half d c in each st of foundation ch. Ch 2, turn. 2nd and subsequent rows: 1 half d c in each st of previous row, till band measures headsize. Join band together with s c. Join sections together by s c over two edges at a time. These ridges thus formed will be on the outside of the hat. Place band on head and drape hat to suit. Pinch the extended portion of the sections together, pin to fit headsize and sew these petalled trimmings thus formed.
