Russian Turban, Scarf and Bag Ensemble Pattern #23

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Knitting & Crochet Cotton, 2 balls of main color (referred to as "A" in instruc­tions) and 1 ball of contrasting color (referred to as "B"). Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4.

   Suggested color combinations are: Color 26 Nile Green and Color 84 Beige; Color 25 Crystal Blue and Color 88 Peach; Color 9 Yellow and White; Skipper Blue and White; Coffee Brown and Peach.


RUSSIAN TURBAN – NO. 23

This hat is made rectangular in shape and then tucked in and draped. Begin with color A. Ch 70 to measure about 10 inches. 1st rnd: Ch 5, 1 half d c in 5th ch from hook, 1 half d c in each st of foundation ch. On opposite side of foundation ch, work 1 half d c in each st. Join rnd with a sl st in 3rd st of ch-5 first made. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Ch 3 (to count as 1 half d c), 1 half d c in each half d c of previous rnd, picking up the front 2 loops only. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-3 first made. ** 4th rnd: Same as 2nd rnd, but pick up back 2 loops only (this will give a ridge effect). 5th and 6th rnds: Same as 2nd rnd. 7th to 25th rnds incl: Repeat from **. 26th rnd: Attach color B, ch 3, 1 half d c in each half d c of previous rnd, picking up front 2 loops only. Join with sl st. 27th and 28th rnds: Pick up color A and work same as 2nd rnd. 29th rnd: Same as 4th rnd. 30th rnd: Pick up color B, and work same as 26th rnd. 31st and 32nd rnds: Same as 27th rnd.
   The depth from foundation ch to lower edge should be about 6 inches. If not, add more rnds. Place on the head lengthwise, tuck in the points, and drape to suit.

 

SCARF – NO. 23

Begin with color A, ch 33. 1st row: 1 s c in 7th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 1 st of foundation ch, 1 d c in next, ch 2, skip 1 st, 1 s c in next, and repeat from *, end­ing row with d c. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: 1 d c in s c of previous row, * ch 2, skip ch-2, 1 s c in d c, ch 2, skip ch-2, 1 d c in next s c, and repeat from * ending row with s c in 3rd st of ch-loop first made. Ch 5, turn. 3rd row: * 1 s c in d c, ch 2, skip ch-2, 1 d c in next s c, ch 2, skip ch-2, and repeat from * ending row with d c in 3rd st of ch-5 first made. Ch 5, turn. 4th row: Same as 2nd row. 5th row: Same as 3rd row. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until work mea­sures 19 inches. Do not break off.

SCARF ENDS: * 1 half d c in ch-2 sp, 1 half d c in d c, 1 half d c in ch-2 sp, 1 half d c in s c, and repeat from * to end of row. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: 1 half d c in each half d c of previous row, always picking up back 2 loops. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Work 2 half d c in 1st half d c of previous row (this is an increase), 1 half d c in each of following half d c. 4th row: Attach contrasting color B. 1 half d c in each half d c of row, ending with 2 half d c in last st. 5th row: Pick up color B. 2 half d c in 1st half d c, and 1 half d c in each of the following half d c. Ch 3, turn. 6th row: 1 half d c in each half d c, ending row with 2 half d c in last st. Ch 3, turn. 7th row: 2 half d c in 1st half d c, 1 half d c in each of the following half d c, working 10 increases at regular intervals. 8th row: Attach color B. 1 half d c in each half d c, ending with 2 half d c in last st. 9th row: Pick up color A, and work same as 7th row. Ch 3, turn. 10th row: Same as 6th row. 11th row: 2 half d c in 1st half d c, and 1 half d c in each of the following half d c. Ch 3, turn. 12th row: Same as 8th row, using color B. 13th to 27th rows incl: Pick up color A, and work pattern with no increases at ends or center. Work opposite end same way. Fin­ish scarf with row of s c in color B along the two sides.

 

CROCHETED BAG – NO. 23

Begin with color A, ch 70. 1st rnd: 1 half d c in 5th ch from hook, and 1 half d c in each st of foundation ch. On opposite side of ch, work 1 half d c in each half d c. Join rnd with a sl st in 3rd st of ch-5 first made. 2nd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as 1 half d c at begin­ning of rnd) 1 half d c in each half d c of previous rnd picking up the front 2 loops. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-3 first made. 3rd rnd: Same as 2nd rnd, but pick up back two loops only. 4th rnd: Attach color B, ch 3, 1 half d c in each half d c of previous rnd, picking up the front 2 loops. Join as before. Pick up color A. ** 5th and 6th rnds: Ch 3, 1 half d c in each half d c of previous rnd, picking up the front 2 loops. Join. 7th rnd: Same as 3rd rnd. 8th rnd: Same as 4th rnd. 9th to 22nd rnds incl: Repeat from ** till 22 rnds are completed (including 5 rnds of contrasting color B). Join as before. 23rd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as 1 tr), 1 tr in each half d c of previous rnd, picking up back 2 loops only. Join with sl st in 3rd st of ch-3 first made. 24th rnd: * Insert hook in next tr (picking up the 2 loops) and draw a loop out, then insert hook in next tr and draw a loop out, thread over, draw through all 3 loops on hook at once (this is a decrease). Re­peat from * to end of rnd. 25th rnd: 1 s c in each st of previous rnd. 26th to 31st rnds incl: 1 s c in each s c of previous rnd. 32nd rnd: Ch 4 (to count as 1 d tr) * skip 1 s c, 1 d tr in next s c, ch 1, and repeat from * to end of rnd. Join with sl st to 4th st of ch-4 first made. 33rd rnd: * 1 s c in ch-1 sp, 1 s c in next d tr, and repeat from * to end of rnd. 34th to 37th rnds incl: 1 s c in each s c of previous rnd.

HANDLE. Ch 12, and join in a ring. 1st rnd: 1 s c in each st. 2nd and subsequent rnds: 1 s c in each s c of previous rnd till work measures 20 inches long. Pull handle through both ends of the 32nd rnd of d tr's, and join the 2 ends of the handle. This will form a double handle.

SLIDES. Make 2 pieces to hold handle in place by working the same way as the handle, only making each piece 2½ inches long. Sew these pieces around handle to form slides and slip one slide down each end of the handle.

COIN PURSE. Ch 30. 1st row: 1 s c in each st of foundation ch, ch 1, turn. 2nd to 38th rows incl: 1 s c in each s c of previous row, ch 1, turn. 39th and subse­quent rows: Decrease 2 s c at beginning of each row till 2 s c are left in the row. Sew up both sides of purse. Work a row of s c in color B around flap of purse. Place a lining in bag and in coin purse, if desired.
