2 Mats; Large Mat approx. 10½-inches, Medium Mat approx. 8½-inches.

MATERIALS—D-M-C Pearl Cotton, Art. 116D, Size 8: 3 balls Yellow Ombre No. 90 (A), 2 balls Con­trasting Ombre No. 58 or No. 55 or No. 71 (B).

Steel Crochet Hook, Size 8.

LARGE MAT

PANSY—With A ch 6, join (with slip st) into ring. Rnd 1—Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 8, * 3 more dc in ring, ch 8; rpt from * 3 times, join in top of ch-3. Rnd 2—Ch 1, skip joined st, 1 sc in next dc, 8 dc in next Loop, ch 4, slip st in 5th st from hook (Picot made), 7 more dc in same Loop, 1 sc in center dc of next 3-dc group, [1 hdc, 8 dc] in next Loop, work a Picot (mark this Picot with thread), [7 dc, 1 hdc] in same Loop, 1 sc in center dc of next group, [8 dc, a Picot, 7 dc] in next Loop, 1 sc in center dc of next group, ch 5, [1 long tr (yo 3 times) and ch 1] in next Loop 13 times, [1 tr and. ch 1] in same Loop twice, [1 dc, ch 1, 1 hdc] in same Loop, 1 sc in center dc of next group, [1 hdc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 tr, ch 1, 1 tr, ch 1] in next Loop, [1 long tr and ch 1] in same Loop 13 times, ch 4, join (in first sc), fasten off. Rnd 16—Slip st to center of next Loop, 1 sc in Loop, a Picot Loop, 1 sc in center of next Picot Loop: to join Pansy ring, ch 6, slip st in 5th ch from hook, ch 2, drop loop from hook, pick up Pansy ring, insert hook down thru marked Picot of any Pansy and draw dropped loop thru, ch 6, slip st in 5th ch from hook, ch 2, 1 sc in center of next Picot Loop, a Picot Loop, 1 sc in center of next Picot Loop, ch 6, slip st in 5th ch from hook, ch 2, drop loop from hook, insert hook in marked Picot of next Pansy and draw dropped loop thru, ch 6, slip st in 5th ch from hook, ch 2, 1 sc in center of next Picot Loop; work and join Pansies in same way around, join, fasten off. Block and press. Pad with quilted or other suitable lining.

MEDIUM MAT

Make 7 Pansies each of A and B as for Pansy of Large Mat. Alternating color A and color B, join Pansies into ring as shown, tacking together Picots that are not marked.

CENTER—Work to end of rnd 6 of Center of Large Mat. Rnd 7—Slip st in first ch of next Loop, 1 sc in next ch of same Loop, work a Picot Loop as follows: ch 6, slip st in 5th ch from hook, ch 8, slip st in 5th ch from hook, ch 2 (Picot Loop made), skip next 3 chs, 1 sc in next ch, a Picot Loop, * 1 sc in 4th ch of next Loop, a Picot Loop, 1 sc in 2nd ch of next Loop, a Picot Loop, skip next 3 chs on same Loop, 1 sc in next ch, a Picot Loop *; rpt between * twice, 1 sc in 2nd ch of next Loop, a Picot Loop, skip next 3 chs, 1 sc in next ch, a Picot Loop; rpt between * 5 times, join (28 Picot Loops). Rpt rnd 8 of Large Mat 4 times. Rpt rnd 16 of Large Mat. Block and press. Pad with quilted or other suitable lining.

“PANSIES” NAPKIN STAND

MATERIALS—D-M-C Pearl Cotton, Art. 116D, Size 8: 2 balls Yellow Ombre No. 90 (A), 1 ball Con­trasting Ombre No. 58 or No. 55 or No. 71 (B).

Steel Crochet Hook, Size 8.

1 Napkin Stand as shown.

CENTER—Work to end of rnd 8 of Center of Large Hot Plate Mat. Rpt rnd 8. Fasten off. Block and press. Make 4 Pansies each of A and B as for Pansy of Large Hot Plate Mat. Alternating color A and color B, join Pansies into ring as shown, tacking together Picots that are not marked. Sew Pansy ring around Center as shown. With A chain 20 inches, fasten off, with this chain, lace last row of Center to Napkin Holder, tie with a bow knot. Make another piece to correspond.
