Pinwheel Popcorn Bedspread Pattern

Make separate sections at your leisure and join them into a bedspread of any desired size.

Approximate Size 90 inches by 102 inches.
(For a Full Double Bed Size)

To make a full size double bedspread use: 28 skeins of Ivory or White Lorraine Boilproof Crochet and Knitting Cotton, Article 50, or 42 skeins of any desired color. 1 Steel Crochet Hook, Standard Size 3.

Size of Hexagons: 9¼ inches from point to point, through center. The entire bedspread is composed of 127 hexagon-shaped pieces, sewn to­gether; 5 half hexagons are inserted at each side, as shown on diagram.

Hexagons—Ch 7, join with a slip st into a ring. 1st row: ch 3, 2 d c in ring (the ch 3 is counted as an additional d c), * ch 2, 3 d c in ring, re­peat from * 4 times, then ch 2, join with a slip st in top st of ch 3 at beginning of round (6 groups in round). 2nd row: 1 slip st in each of the 2 d c at beginning of row below and 1 slip st in first ch st, ch 3, 2 d c in first space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space, * ch 2, 3 d c in next space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space; repeat from * 4 times, then ch 2, join with a slip st in top of ch 3 at beginning of round, 1 slip st in each of the next 2 d c and 1 slip st in first ch st. (Join every round in this way with 4 slip sts; this will not again be described in detail.) 3rd round: ch 3, 2 d c in first space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space, * ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 3 d c in next space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space; repeat from * 4 times; ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, join to beginning of round with 4 slip sts. 4th round: ch 3, 2 d c in first space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space, * ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 3 d c in next space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space; repeat from * 4 times, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, join with 4 slip sts. 5th round: ch 3, 2 d c in first space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space, * ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 6 d c in next space, remove loop from hook, insert this in top st of first d c of group and draw the dropped loop through, thus completing the "popcorn" stitch; ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 3 d c in next space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space; repeat from * 4 times; ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 1 pop­corn in next space, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, join with 4 slip sts. 6th round: ch 3, 2 d c in first space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space, * ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 1 popcorn in next space, ch 2, 1 popcorn in next space, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, a shell in next space (shell = 3 d c, ch 2, 3 d c in same space); repeat from *4 times; ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 1 pop­corn in next space, ch 2, 1 popcorn in next space, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, join with 4 slip sts. 7th round: ch 3, 2 d c in first space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space, * ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 1 popcorn in next space, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 1 popcorn in next space, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, a shell in next space; repeat from * 4 times; ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 1 popcorn in next space, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 1 popcorn in next space, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, join with 4 slip sts. Continue in this way to work 7 more rounds, always having 2 spaces on each side of the shells, and 1 more space between the popcorns in each successive round, as shown in illustration; in the 14th round there will be 9 spaces between the popcorns in each of the 6 sections.

Half Hexagons—Ch 8, join into a ring. 1st row: ch 5, 3 d c, ch 2, 3 d c, ch 2, 3 d c, ch 2, 1 d c—all in the ring. 2nd row: ch 5, turn, 3 d c in first space under ch 2, ch 2, a shell in next space, ch 2, a shell in next space, ch 2, 3 d c in space under turning ch 5 at end of row below, ch 2, 1 d c in same space as the 3 d c. 3rd row: ch 4, turn, 3 d c in first space (under ch 2), ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, a shell in next space, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, a shell in next space, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 3 d c under ch 5 at end of row below, ch 2, 1 d c in same place as the 3 d c. 4th row: ch 5, turn, 3 d c in first space, * ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, a shell in next space; repeat from * once, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 3 d c under ch 5 at end of row, ch 2, 1 d c in same place as 3 d c. 5th row: ch 5, turn, 3 d c in first space, * ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 1 popcorn in next space, ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, a shell in next space; repeat from * once, 2 spaces, 1 popcorn, 2 spaces, 3 d c in space under turning chain, ch 2, 1 d c in same place as 3 d c. 6th row: ch 5, turn, 3 d c in first space, * ch 2, 1 d c in next space, ch 2, 6 d c in next space, remove loop from hook, insert this from right side of work in first d c and draw dropped loop through (in this way the popcorn will "pop" to right side of work even though worked from the wrong side); ch 2, 1 popcorn, 2 spaces, 1 shell; repeat from * once, 2 spaces, 1 popcorn, 1 space, 1 pop­corn, 2 spaces, 3 d c under turning chain at end of row, ch 2, 1 d c in same place as 3 d c. Con­tinue in this way to work beginning and end of all rows as in preceding rows, and the rest in same pattern as full hexagons, until there are 14 rows from beginning; fasten off. Make 10 half hexagons.

Sew pieces together as shown in illustration and diagram; when sewing, work from wrong side and take up only top thread of edge sts, so that the lower threads of top sts show on right side on each side of seam; take care that seams do not bind.

Edging—Working from right side, make 1 d c in first space on end of spread, * ch 2, 1 d c in next space, repeat from * to corner shell, ch 2, 1 d c in center st of 3 d c, ch 2, 1 d c in space of shell, ch 2, 1 d c in same space, ch 2, 1 d c in center of next 3 d c, ch 2, 1 d c in next space; work 1 space on each space to next shell, 5 spaces over shell (as on last shell); 1 space on each space to last space before seam, ch 2, 1 d c in center of the 3 d c before seam, omit ch 2 and work 1 d c in first st after seam, ch 2, 1 d c in center of next 3 d c; continue in this way to corner; work same row across other end and side; fasten off.

Fringe—Wind thread over a 5-inch cardboard, cut at one end; tie 6 strands in each mesh on 3 sides of spread (sides and foot of bed).
