Sunflower Popcorn Bedspread Pattern

There are slight variations to materials and instructions between these two versions of the same pattern in different publications. Two versions are below.

 

Lorraine #49, Heirloom Bedspreads

Make separate sections at your leisure and join them into a bedspread of any desired size.

Approximate Size 86 inches by 102 inches. (For a Full Double Bed Size)

To make a full size double bedspread use: 42 skeins of Ivory or White Lorraine Boilproof Crochet and Knitting Cotton, Article 50, or 62 skeins of any desired color. 1 Steel Crochet Hook, Standard Size 7.

This Bedspread is composed of 53 hexagons and 6 half hexagons, arranged as shown on chart and sewed together. The hexagons should measure about 13½ inches from point to point.

Hexagons—Ch 9, join with a slip st into a ring. 1st round: 18 s c in ring, join with a slip st in first s c. 2nd round: ch 3, 4 d c in same st as joining st, drop loop from hook, insert this in top st of ch 3 and draw dropped loop through, * ch 2, skip 1 s c, 5 d c in next s c, drop loop from hook, insert this in top of the first of the 5 d c just made and draw dropped loop through ("popcorn" st); repeat from * around (9 popcorns in round); end with ch 2, 1 slip st in top of ch 3 at beginning of round. 3rd round: ch 5, 1 d c in space after first popcorn, * ch 2, 1 d c in top st of next popcorn, ch 2, 1 d c in next space; repeat from * around, end with ch 2, 1 slip st in 3rd st of ch 5 at beginning of round. 4th round: 3 s c in first space, * 1 s c in top of next d c, 3 s c in next space, repeat from * around, ending with 1 s c in joining st at beginning of round. 5th round: 2 s c in first st, taking up top thread only of st, * 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts (take up top thread only of all sts, until directed otherwise), 3 s c in next st; repeat from * around, ending with 1 s c in each of the last 3 sts before the 2 s c in first st of round. 6th round: 3 s c in first st, * 1 s c in each of the next 5 sts, 3 s c in next st (center st, or point, of the 3 s c below); repeat from * around, ending with 1 s c in each of the last 5 sts before center st of point at beginning of round. Continue in this way to increase (3 s c in 1 st) at center of each of the 18 points, until there are 12 rounds of s c; there will be 2 sts more between points in each successive round; in 12th s c round there will be 25 sts between center sts in points. Next round (16th round from beginning) slip-stitch over the first 8 sts, then fold and join pleats as follows: place next point to last point (right side of work inside fold), work 1 s c in next st on both edges, inserting hook under top thread of both sts, join the next 4 edge sts in same way, * ch 4, fold the next 2 points together, skip 8 sts from point and join the next 5 sts of both edges; repeat from * until all "petals" are joined; end with ch 4 and join with a slip st in the first of the 5 joining sts of first petal. 17th round: 1 slip st in next st, 2 s c in next st (the 3rd of the 5 joining sts), * 1 s c in each of the next 26 sts, 3 s c in next st; repeat from * to end of round; there will be 6 increasing points in round (including the first point, which has only 2 sts) and 26 sts between all increases; the round ends just before the first increase. 18th round: 3 s c in next st, * 1 s c in each of the next 28 sts, 3 s c in next st (center st of next point), repeat from * around. Work 4 more rounds of s c, increasing in center st of all points in every round, and ending last round just before the point st. 23rd round: 1 slip st in next (top) st, ch 4, 1 d c in same st as slip st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 d c in next st; repeat from * 7 times; ch 1, skip 2 sts, 1 d c in next st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 d c in next st; repeat from last * 8 times, ending with a d c in point st; ch 1, 1 more d c in point st; work in same way on remaining 5 sides of hexagon (19 spaces between each point-space); end with ch 1, 1 slip st in 3rd st of ch 4 at beginning of round. 24th round: 1 s c in first space (point), ch 4, 1 d c in same space, * ch 1, 1 d c in next space, repeat from * to next point, ending with 1 d c in point- space, ch 1, 1 d c in same space; continue in same way to end of round, ch 1, 1 slip st in 3rd st of ch 4 at beginning of round. 25th round: 2 s c in next ch st, * 1 s c in each d c (taking up top thread only) and 1 s c in each chain st to next corner space, 3 s c in ch 1 of corner space; repeat from * on remaining 5 sides of hexagon (43 s c between point sts on each side). 26th round: 3 s c in first st (point), 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts (taking up top thread only, a3 before), * 1 popcorn in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 5 sts, repeat from * until there are 7 popcorns, 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts to point, 3 s c in point st; continue in same way to end of round. 27th round: * 3 s c in point st, 1 s c in each st to next point; repeat from * around. 28th round: 3 s c in point st, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 popcorn in next st, * 1 s c in each of 5 sts, 1 popcorn in next st (center st between popcorns in last popcorn row); repeat from * until there are 8 popcorns, 1 s c in each of the remaining 2 s c to next corner st, 3 s c in corner st; continue in this way on remaining 5 sides of hexagon. 29th round: same as 27th round. 30th round: 1 slip st in corner st, ch 4, 1 d c in same corner st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 d c in next st; repeat from * to next corner, ending with 1 d c in corner st, ch 1, 1 more d c in same corner st; repeat from, * on remaining 5 sides, ending with ch 1, 1 slip st in 3rd st of ch 4 at beginning of round. 31st round: same as 24th round. 32nd round: same as 25th round. 33rd round: 3 s c in corner st, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts, * 1 popcorn in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 5 sts; repeat from * until there are 9 popcorns; 1 s c in each of 4 sts to next corner, 3 s c in corner st; continue in this way on remaining 5 sides of hexagon. 34th round: same as 27th round. 35th round: 3 s c in corner st, 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts, * 1 popcorn in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 5 sts; repeat from * until there are 10 popcorns; 1 s c in each of the 3 sts to next corner, 3 s c in corner st; continue in this way on remaining 5 sides. 36th round: same as 27th round. 37th round: 3 s c in corner st, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, * 1 popcorn in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 5 sts; repeat from * until there are 11 popcorns; 1 s c in each of remaining 2 sts to corner st, 3 s c in corner st; continue in this way to end of round. 38th round: same as 27th round. 39th round: same as 30th round. 40th round: same as 31st round. This completes one hexagon.

Half Hexagons—Ch 7, join with a slip st, 12 s c in ring. 2nd row: turn, ch 5, 1 popcorn in 3rd s c below, * ch 2, skip 1 s c, 1 popcorn in next s c, repeat from * until there are 5 popcorns, ch 5, 3 more s c in ring, ch 3, join with a slip st to 3rd st of turning chain at end of row. 3rd row: ch 4, 1 d c in same st as slip st just made, ch 1, 1 d c in space before first popcorn, ch 1, 1 d c in top st of popcorn, ch 1, 1 d c in next space, * ch 1, 1 d c in top of next popcorn, ch 1, 1 d c in same place, ch 1, 1 d c in next space, ch 1, 1 d c in top of next popcorn, ch 1, 1 d c in next space; repeat from * once, then ch 1, 1 d c in 3rd st of ch 5 at end of row below, ch 1, 1 d c in same st. 4th row: ch 4, turn, 1 d c in first space, 5 even spaces (an even space=ch 1, 1 d c in next space); ch 1, 1 d c in same space as last d c; 5 even spaces, ch 1, 1 d c in same space as last d c; 5 even spaces, ending with a d c in space under turning chain in row below; ch 1, 1 d c in 3rd st of same turning chain. 5th row: ch 1, turn, 1 s c in each of the first 13 sts (take up top thread only of sts below), 3 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 11 sts, 3 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 11 sts, 2 s c on turning ch at end of row below; break off. 6th row: beginning at same side as 5th row, make 2 s c in first st (taking up top thread only as in preceding row), 1 s c in each of the 2 sts, * 1 popcorn in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts, repeat from * once; 1 popcorn in next st, 1 s c in each of 2 sts, 3 s c in next st (the center st of the increase in row below); 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts; 3 popcorns, with 3 s c between each; 1 s c in each of 2 sts after the 3rd popcorn, 3 s c in next st (center st of increase below); 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts; 3 popcorns with 3 s c between each; 1 s c in each of 2 sts after the last popcorn, 2 s c in next st (end st of row). 7th row: ch 1, turn, 2 s c in first st, 15 s c on the next 15 sts (taking up the top threads only, so that the lower thread shows on right side), 3 s c in next st (corner st); 15 s c on the next 15 sts, 3 s c in next st (corner st); 15 s c on the next 15 sts, 2 s c in last st. 8th row: ch 1, turn,  2 s c in first st, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts (take up top thread as before) ; 4 popcorns with 3 s c between each; 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 3 s c in next st (corner st); 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 4 popcorns, with 3 s c between each, 2 s c after the last popcorn; 3 s c in next corner st, 2 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 4 popcorns, with 3 s c between each; 1 s c in each of 2 sts, 2 s c in last st of row below. 9th row: ch 1, turn, 2 s c in first st, 1 s c in each st (upper threads of top sts) to first corner, 3 s c in corner st, 1 s c in each st to next corner, 3 s c in corner st, 1 s c in each st to within 1 st of end of row, 2 s c in end st (there will be 21 sts in each section, besides the increased sts). 10th row: ch 4, turn, 1 d c in first st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 d c in next st, taking up back thread of st; repeat from * to st just before corner st (12 spaces, including space made by turning chain), ch 1, 1 d c in same corner st; 11 spaces to next corner st, ch 1, 1 more d c in corner st; * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 d c in next st; repeat from * to last st, ch 1, 1 more d c in last st (11 spaces between each corner space). 11th row: ch 4, 1 d c in first space, 12 even spaces to corner space, ch 1, 1 d c in same corner space, 12 even spaces to next corner space, ch 1, 1 d c in same corner space, 12 even spaces, ch 1, 1 more d c in last space (under turning chain). 12th row: ch 1, turn, 1 s c in first st, taking up top thread, 1 s c in each st (26) to corner, 3 s c in corner st, 1 s c in each st (25) to next corner, 3 s c in corner st, 1 s c in each of the 25 sts to turning chain at end of row, 1 s c in first st of chain, 1 s c in next st of chain; break off. 13th row: beginning at other end, make 2 s c in first st (taking up top thread), 1 s c in each st to corner, 3 s c in corner st, 1 s c in each st to next corner, 3 s c in corner st, 1 s c in each st to end of row, 1 more s c in last st; break off. Work 4 more rows same as last row; these 6 plain rows form the same pattern as the 6 plain rows after the rosette in the full hexagon. 18th row: same as 10th row (with 19 spaces between each corner space). 19th row: same as 11th row (20 spaces between corner spaces). 20th row: same as 12th row; break off. From now on follow the design as given for the last 15 rows of the full hexagon, working back and forth as directed for the same patterns in the first part of half hexagon. Work the last 2 rows also on the 4th side of half hexagon.

Make 6 half hexagons.

Arrange the pieces as indicated on chart, and sew them together from wrong side, using the crochet cotton to sew with and taking up top thread only of edge sts.

Fringe—Wind thread around a 6-inch cardboard, cut at one end, tie 6 strands in each space on edge, on 3 sides of spread.

 

Spool Cotton #232, Bedspreads

MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN" or BEDSPREAD COTTON: Single Size Spread—68 x 104 inches—72 balls of White or Ecru, or 108 balls of any color, Double Size Spread—90 x 104 inches—90 balls of White or Ecru, or 133 balls of any color … Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

GAUGE: Block measures 12½ inches from side to side.

BLOCK … Starting at center, ch 9. Join with sl st. 1st rnd: Ch 1, 18 sc in ring. Sl st in 1st sc. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, 4 dc in back loop of next st, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top st of ch-3 and draw dropped loop through (pc st made), * ch 2, skip 1 sc, 5 dc in back loop of next sc, drop loop from hook, insert hook in 1st dc of 5-dc group and draw dropped loop through (another pc st made). Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, sl st in top of 1st pc st. 3rd rnd: Ch 5, * dc in next sp, ch 2, dc in top of next pc st, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Sl st in 3rd ch of ch-5. 4th rnd: Ch 1, 3 sc in same place as sl st, * sc in next sp, 3 sc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to 1st sc.
   Hereafter pick up only the back loop of each sc.
   5th to 16th rnds incl: * 3 sc in next sc (center sc of 3-sc group), sc in each sc to center sc of next 3-sc group. Repeat from * around. Join (each 3-sc-group is the beginning of a petal—18 petals in rnd). 17th rnd: Mark the center stitch between each petal with a colored thread. Then sl st in each sc to within 5 sc of first marker. * Holding the marker in left hand, fold the next petal back to 5 sts from marker, having right sides together. Then, working through both thicknesses, make sc in next 5 sts, ch 4. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 4. Join. 18th rnd: Working in back loop only, make * sc in next 2 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, sc in next 4 ch, (sc in next 5 sc, sc in next 4 ch) twice. HALF BLOCK … Starting at center, ch 9. Join with sl st. 1st row: 9 sc in ring, sl st in last 3 ch of ring, sl st in 1st sc. 2nd row: Ch 3, 4 dc in same place as sl st and complete pc st as before, (ch 2, skip 1 sc, make a 5-dc pc st in back loop of next sc) 4 times. Break off.
   Note: Hereafter, break off at end of each row and attach thread to beginning of previous row.
   3rd row: Attach thread to tip of 1st pc st, ch 5, * dc in next sp, ch 2, dc in next pc st, ch 2. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 2, dc in tip of last pc st (8 sps). Break off. 4th row: Attach thread to 3rd ch of ch-5, * sc in sp, 3 sc in next dc. Repeat from * across, ending with 3 sc in last dc. Break off. Hereafter pick up only the back loop of each st. 5th to 16th rows incl: Sc in each sc across, making 3 sc in center sc of each 3-sc group. Break off. 17th row: Mark the center st between each petal with a colored thread. Place a pin in 9th sc from beginning of previous row. With wrong side facing attach thread to sc at pin, ch 5, skip 3 sc, sc in next 5 sc. Turn work so that right side is facing, * ch 5, holding the marker in left hand, fold the next petal back to 5 sts from marker, then, working through both thicknesses, make sc in next 5 sts. Repeat from * 6 more times; then with wrong side of last petal facing make sc in last 5 sc (85 sts on row). Break off. 18th row: Attach thread to 1st ch and make sc in each st across (85 sc). Break off. 19th row: Attach thread to 1st sc, 2 sc in same place, (sc in next 27 sc, 3 sc in next sc) twice; sc in next 27 sc, 2 sc in last sc. Break off. 20th to 23rd rows incl: Sc in each sc across, making 2 sc in 1st and last sc and 3 sc in center sc of each 3-sc group (115 sc on 23rd row). 24th row: Attach thread to 1st sc, ch 4, dc in same place, * (ch 1, skip 1 sc, dc in next sc) 18 times; ch 1, in center dc of next 3-sc group make dc, ch 1 and dc. Repeat from * across, ending with dc, ch 1 and dc in last sc. Break off.
   Hereafter work as for Block to within last 2 rows, always making an extra sp at beginning and end of each row of sps and 2 sc at beginning and end of each sc-row (214 sc on last row). Now work 2 rnds all around as follows: 1st rnd: Attach thread to 1st sc, ch 4, dc in same sp, * (ch 1, skip 1 sc, dc in next sc) 34 times; ch 1, in center st of next 3-sc group make dc, ch 1 and dc. Repeat from * across 3 sides, ending with dc, ch 1 and dc in last sc. Continue making ch-1 sps along remaining side, ending with ch 1, sl st in 3rd ch of ch-4. 2nd rnd: Sl st in sp, ch 4, dc in same sp, * ch 1, dc in next sp. Repeat from * around, making dc, ch 1 and dc in each corner sp. Join and break off.
   For Single Size Spread make 3 rows of 8 Blocks and 2 rows of 7 Blocks. For Double Size Spread make 4 rows of 8 Blocks and 3 rows of 7 Blocks. Sew Blocks neatly together on wrong side. Fill in spaces at top and bottom of spread with Half Blocks.
