Materials:
Chadwick's Red Heart Saxony, 5 balls (⅔ oz. balls).
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4.
3 small buttons.
Gauge: 9 d c make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.
Work starts at bottom of Back, is worked up to shoulders, and then continued down Front.
Back. Starting at bottom, ch 82 (to measure 10 inches), turn. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across (80 d c). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip 1 d c, d c in next d c, * pc st in next d c (to make a pc st, ch 1, 5 d c in next d c, drop st from hook, insert hook back in ch-1 and draw loop through the one on hook), d c in each of next 2 d c. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: D c in each d c across (80 d c). Ch 3, turn. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately 3 more times. Then repeat 3rd row only, until piece measures 6 inches in all. Ch 50 (to measure about 5½ inches, thus starting sleeve). Drop this strand of yarn. Attach another strand of yarn at opposite side and ch 48 (other sleeve). Break off. Next row: Pick up yarn at opposite side and make d c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across, d c in each d c, d c in each ch across. Ch 3, turn. Following row: With right side of work toward you (the side with the pc st is right side of work), skip 1 d c, d c in next d c, * pc st in next d c, d c in each of next 2 d c. Repeat from * one more, then continue making d c in d c across to within last 6 d c, ** pc st in next d c, d c in each of next 2 d c. Repeat from ** once. Ch 3, turn. Next row: D c in each d c across. Ch 3, turn. Repeat these last 2 rows alternately until sleeve measures 3½ inches wide. Continuing in pattern, work across 1st 70 d c, ch 3, turn (thus starting neck shaping). Hereafter work over these 70 d c only, for 2 inches, ending at neck edge. Then ch 20, turn. Next row: D c in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across, and continue in pattern to end of row. Ch 3, turn. Hereafter work in pattern straight for 1½ inches (thus forming center front opening), ending at center opening. Break off. Skip 36 d c, attach yarn to next d c and work opposite side to correspond, ending at sleeve edge. Do not break off, but ch 3, turn, and continue across entire row (thus closing front opening). Work in pattern as before until sleeve measures 7½ inches wide. Break off. Skip 48 d c of sleeve, attach yarn to next d c and work in pattern across to within last 48 d c. Ch 3, turn, and work Front to correspond with Back. Break off.
Neck Band. Starting at center front opening, with wrong side of work toward you, ch 3 and make a row of d c all around neck edge, decreasing at corners to keep neck perfectly square. Ch 3, turn. Work a row of pc st as for border, decreasing if necessary at corners. Ch 3, turn. Repeat these last 2 rows once more. Then work a row of s c along front opening, making 3 ch-5 buttonloops on right side.
Sew up underarm and sleeve seams. Work 3 rows of d c around bottom of sleeves. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonloops.
