MATERIALS:
Use one of the following threads—
J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 7 balls of White or Ecru, or 8 balls of any color.
Clark's O.N.T. Lustersheen, 5 skeins of White or Ecru, or 7 skeins of any color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4 or 5.

When blocked, place mats measure about 12 x 18 inches; center mat measures about 12 x 32 inches.

Gauge: 4 rows make 1¾ inches.

PLACE MATS (Make 6) … Starting at short side, make a 16-inch chain (11 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: Tr in 5th ch from hook, tr in next 3 ch, * ch 3, skip 3 ch, tr in next ch, ch 3, skip 3 ch, tr in next 5 ch. Repeat from * across until 10 tr-groups are made, ending with 5 tr. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 8, turn. 2nd row: * Skip 3 tr, tr in last tr of tr-group, ch 3, make a cluster in next tr—to make a cluster, make 4 tr, retaining on hook the last loop of each tr; thread over and draw through all loops; ch 1 tightly—ch 2 more, tr in next tr, ch 3. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 3, tr in 4th st of turning ch. Ch 4, turn. 3rd row: * Tr in each of 3 ch, tr in next tr; in tip of cluster make tr, ch 9 and tr; tr in next tr. Repeat from * across, ending with tr in 1st 4 ch of ch-8. Ch 4, turn. 4th row: Tr in next 4 tr, * ch 3, s c in ch-9 loop, ch 3, tr in next 5 tr. Repeat from * across (last tr is made in turning ch). Ch 8, turn. 5th row: Like 2nd row (making clusters in s c of previous row). 6th row: * Tr in next 3 ch, tr in next tr, ch 3, tr in tip of cluster; ch 3, tr in next tr. Repeat from * across, ending with tr in 4th st of turning ch. Ch 8, turn. Repeat 2nd to 6th rows incl. until piece measures approximately 16½ inches. Do not break off but, keeping work flat, make s c all around. Then make another row of s c, picking up back loop only. Fasten off.

CENTER MAT … Work as for place mats until piece measures approximately 29½ inches (instead of 16½). Then work 2 rows of s c as for place mats. Fasten off.

Block pieces to given measurements.
