Materials: Clark's O.N.T. (6 balls) or J. & P. Coats (5 balls) Mercerized Crochet, size 20, White or Ecru; or 3 balls of Clark's Big Ball Mercerized Crochet, size 20. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8.

When completed, chair back measures about 16 x 30 inches.

Beginning at bottom of chart, ch 134 (to measure about 10 inches), turn. 1st row: Tr in 5th ch from hook, tr in each ch across (131 tr counting turning ch as 1 tr). Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: Tr in each tr across (131 tr). Ch 4, turn. 3rd row: Tr in each of next 10 tr, * ch 4, skip 4 tr, tr in next tr (1 sp), make 4 more sps, then, ch 4, skip 4 tr, tr in each of next 11 tr, repeat from * twice more. Ch 4, turn. 4th row: * Tr in each tr of group, sp over each of next 6 sps, repeat from * twice more, tr in each tr of group. Ch 4, turn. 5th, 6th and 7th rows: Same as 4th row. At end of 7th row, turn and break off. 8th row: Ch 40, tr in each tr of group, starting at end where thread was just broken off, sp over each sp and tr in each tr of previous row. Ch 43, turn. 9th row: Tr in 5th ch from hook, tr in each of next 38 ch, ** tr in each tr of group, * 4 tr in next sp, tr in next tr, repeat from * 5 more times, then repeat from ** twice more, tr in each tr of group, tr in each ch of ch-40. Ch 4, turn. 10th row: Tr in each tr to end of row. Ch 4, turn. Hereafter follow chart until 89 rows are completed. Do not break off, but continue with edging along long side as follows in the chart below.

Edging. 1st row: 2 s c over tr just made, 1 s c in top of next tr (between 88th and 89th rows), * ch 6, 1 s c in top of next tr (between 87th and 88th rows), 2 s c over next tr, 1 s c in top of next tr, repeat from * across to next corner, then, ch 6, s c in each of next 4 tr, ch 6, skip 3 tr, s c in each of next 4 tr and continue thus all around edge. Join with sl st. 2nd row: S c in each of next 2 s c of previous row, * 3 s c in ch-6 loop, ch 3, 3 s c in same loop, s c in each of next 4 s c, repeat from * around. Join and break off.
