Materials Required
AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "PURITAN" MERCERIZED CROCHET AND KNITTING COTTON
24 400-yd. Balls Cream.
18 400-yd. Balls Beige.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.
Each Square measures about 5¼ inches.
75 squares 5 x 15 are required for top of single spread.
Finished spread measures about 80 x 107 inches.

SQUARE. With Cream, ch 50, d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each remaining ch, (48 d c) ch 3, turn.

2nd Row—D c in same space with ch 3, 1 d c in each of the next 45 d c, thread over needle, insert in next st and pull loop through, insert in 3rd st of ch and pull through, thread over and pull through 3 loops, threads over and pull through 2 loops, ch 3, turn.

Repeat 2nd row until there are 21 rows of d c, turn and work 1 s c in each d c, 3 s c in corner, then work 46 s c on side of motif (about 13 sts for every 6 rows) 3 s c in corner and complete other 2 sides to correspond.

Work 74 more motifs in same manner. Sew 5 squares together having 1st, 3rd and 5th squares vertical and the 2nd and 4th squares horizontal.

2nd Row—Sew 5 squares together in same manner reversing the vertical and horizontal squares.

Repeat 2nd row 13 times.

Border. With Beige, work a row of s c on 2 long and 1 short side, ch 3, turn.

2nd Row—* Thread over, insert in st, pull through, repeat from *, thread over and pull through all loops but one, thread over and pull through remaining 2 loops, ** ch 1, skip 1 st, thread over, insert in next st, pull through, * thread over, insert in same st, pull through, repeat from *, thread over and work off all loops but one, thread over and work off remaining 2 loops, (a puff st) repeat from ** to corner, in corner loop work 3 puff sts, with ch 1 between each puff st continue all around in same manner, ch 4, turn. Always ch 1 between each puff st in each puff st row.

3rd Row—Puff st between puff sts of previous row to corner, work 2 puff sts in each of the 4 one ch loops at corner and continue all around in same manner, ch 4, turn.

4th Row—Puff st between puff sts of previous row to within one 1 ch loop at corner, 2 puff sts in next loop, 3 puff sts in corner loop, 2 puff sts in next loop, continue all around working other corner in same manner, ch 1, turn.

5th Row—2 s c in each ch 1 loop between puff sts of previous row, ch 3, turn.

6th Row—1 d c in each s c, working 3 d c in center st at corners, ch 3, turn.

7th Row—1 d c in each d c, working 3 d c in center st at corners, ch 1, turn.

8th Row—1 s c in each d c, ch 4, turn.

* Next 5 Rows—Work puff st rows increasing at corners in same manner as previous puff st rows.

Next 4 Rows—Repeat the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th rows.

Repeat from * and then work 3 more rows of puff sts, ch 1, turn and work a row of s c all around, break thread.

Side Flounce. Join Cream in back loop of center st at corner of long side and work 1 tr c in each s c working in back loop of st only, ch 4, turn. In the following rows work into both loops of st.

2nd Row—1 tr c in each tr c, ch 4, turn.

Repeat 2nd row 18 times, break thread.

21st Row—Join Beige in tr c and work 1 d c in each tr c across row, ch 1, turn.

22nd Row—1 s c in each d c, ch 4, turn.

23rd Row—Puff st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, puff st in next st, repeat from * across row, ch 4, turn.

Next 3 Rows—Work 3 more rows of puff sts working puff sts between puff sts of previous row, ch 1, turn.

27th Row—2 s c over each ch 1 loop, ch 3, turn.

28th Row—1 d c in each st, break thread.

Next Row—Join Cream and work 1 tr c in each st, ch 4, turn.

Next 4 Rows—Work 1 tr c in each tr c.

Repeat from 21st row.

47th Row—Join Beige in tr c, 1 d c in each tr c, ch 1, turn.

48th Row—1 s c in each d c, ch 4, turn.

Next 7 Rows—Work puff sts same as previous puff st rows, ch 1, turn.

56th Row—2 s c over each 1 ch loop, ch 3, turn.

57th Row—1 d c in each st, break thread.

Work other side and lower edge to correspond.

Join Beige in free loop of last Beige row on top of spread and work a row of s c all around taking up free loop of each st to form a ridge.
