Repeat from * across, until 45 shells are made. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 5, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: 3 d c in 1st s c, * s c in next ch-3 of shell, ch 3, 3 d c in same ch-3 of shell. Repeat from * across, ending with s c in turning ch. Ch 5, turn. 4th row: Work across row until 9 shells are made, ending with s c in ch-3 of next shell, (ch 6, s c in ch-3 of next shell) 27 times; make 9 shells. Ch 5, turn.
5th row: 9 shells, (ch 6, s c in next loop) 27 times; ch 6, s c in ch-3 of next shell, ch 3 and make 8 shells as before. Ch 5, turn. 6th row: 8 shells, 29 loops, 8 shells. Ch 5, turn. 7th row: 8 shells, 30 loops, 7 shells. Continue to work as for last 2 rows, always making 1 loop more on each row and decreasing number of shells as before, until 2 shells remain at each end of row. Next row: 2 shells, 41 loops, ch 3 and complete a shell in same loop as last s c was made, make another shell, ch 3, turn. Work in this manner, keeping 2 shells at both ends of each row and working loops as before across remainder of row, until 42 rows in all are made. Ch 5, turn. Next row: 3 d c in 1st s c, s c in ch-3 of next shell, ch 3, 3 d c in same ch-3 of shell, s c in ch-3 of next shell, ch 3, 3 d c in same ch-3, s c in next ch-6 loop (1 shell increased and 1 loop decreased). * Ch 6, s c in next loop. Repeat from * across, ending with s c in last loop. Ch 3, 3 d c in same loop, s c in ch-3 of next shell, make 1 more shell. Ch 5, turn. Continue in this manner, increasing 1 shell at beginning of each row and decreasing 1 loop on each row until there are 9 shells at both ends of row. Then work 3 rows of shells to correspond with opposite end—to make a. shell over a loop, make s c, ch 3 and 3 d c in loop. Fasten off.
