Jar Hanging Planter Pattern #865

The * is used in repeating – ‘repeat from *’ – means to repeat everything that follows the last *.

Parentheses ( ) are used to repeat everything inside the ( ) a given number of times or to explain a stitch.

Chain = ch; Stitch = st; Slip Stitch = sl st; Single Crochet = sc; Double Crochet = dc.

This pattern contains directions for two crocheted planter-hangers worked with either a single strand of Double Quick (8-Cord) Cotton or a double strand of Bedspread Cotton.

MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS AND SIZES

Original Holders made of Lily Double Quick (8-Cord) Cotton.

ALSO: A jar approximately 3 inches in diameter and 5¼ inches in height is required for Jar Plant Holder.

FIRST PLANTER JAR

1ST ROUND: Starting at bottom of holder, with a single strand of Double Quick or a double strand of Bedspread Cotton ch 4, join with a sl st in first st of chain to form a ring, ch 1, work 12 sc into ring, join with a sl st in first sc.

2ND ROUND: Do not turn in this or following rounds, ch 1, 2 sc in same st as last sl st and in each sc around, join with a sl st in first sc.

There are 24 sc in last round.

3RD ROUND: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as last sl st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc; repeat from * around, end with 2 sc in last sc, join with a sl st in first sc.

There are 30 sc in last round.

4TH AND 5TH ROUNDS: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as last sl st, 1 sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in first sc.

6TH ROUND: Ch 3, 1 dc in same st as last sl st, * ch 3, skip next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st; repeat from * around, end with ch 3, skip last 2 sts, join with a sl st in top st of ch 3 at beginning of round.

There are 10 (2-dc groups – counting ch 3 at beginning of round as 1 dc) with ch 3 be­tween groups in last round.

7TH AND 8TH ROUNDS: Sl st across to center st of next ch loop, ch 3, 1 dc in same st as last sl st, * ch 5, skip next 2 dc, 2 dc in center st of next ch loop; repeat from * around, end with ch 5, join with a sl st in top st of ch 3 at beginning of round.

9TH ROUND: Sl st across to the center st of first ch loop, ch 3, 4 dc in same st as last sl st, * skip next 2 dc, 5 dc (shell) in center st of next ch loop; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in top st of ch 3 at beginning of round.

There are 10 shells in last round.

10TH ROUND: Sl st to center dc of first shell, ch 3, 4 dc in same st as last sl st, * work a shell in center dc of next shell; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in top st of ch 3.

11TH ROUND: Sl st to center dc of first shell, ch 3, 1 dc in same st as last sl st, * ch 5, 2 dc in center dc of next shell; repeat from * around, end with ch 5, join with a sl st in top st of ch 3.

12TH ROUND: Sl st to center st of next ch loop, ch 3, 1 dc in same st as last sl st, * ch 5, skip next 2 dc, 2 dc in center st of next ch loop; repeat from * around, end with ch 5, join with a sl st in top st of ch 3.

13TH ROUND: Sl st to first ch loop, ch 1, work 5 sc in same ch loop as last sl st, * skip next 2 dc, 5 sc in next ch loop; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in first sc.

There are 50 sc in last round.

14TH AND 15TH ROUNDS: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as last sl st, 1 sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in first sc.

HANGING CORD: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as last sl st, ch 50, skip next 23 sc of last round of holder, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, turn, with right side of chain facing, work 1 sc in each st of chain, 1 sc in next sc of holder; break off.

BOTTOM: Work first 5 rounds same as for Holder.

6TH ROUND: Do not turn, ch 1, work a rib sc around same st as last sl st as follows: (insert hook from front to back, around st to front again, thread over and pull loop through, thread over and through 2 loops on hook), work a rib sc around each sc, join with a sl st in first sc; break off leaving a length for sewing.

FINISHING: Fill bottom slightly with polyester filling or any desired filling. Thread length of cotton into a darning needle and sew to 5th round of Holder as Illustrated.
