Crocheted Jacket Pattern #551

The * is used in repeating – ‘repeat from *’ – means to repeat everything that follows the last *.

Chain = ch; Stitch = st; Slip Stitch = sl st; Single Crochet = sc; Double Crochet = dc; Treble Crochet = tr.

This pattern (complete in one sheet) contains directions for a jacket of easy-to-crochet squares. It can be made of 3-ply fingering yarn, string, or string with metallic woven through. Pattern includes sizes 32-34, 36-38, 40-42 and 44-46.

MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS AND SIZES

NOTE: Before starting jacket, it is advisable to make a sample square to insure the correct size. Unless square is the size given, jacket will not fit correctly.

SIZE 32-34

SQUARE (4¼ Inches) – 1ST ROUND: Ch 8, join with a sl st into a ring, ch 3, 2 dc into ring, * ch 3, 3 dc into ring; repeat from * 6 more times, ch 3, a sl st in top st of first ch 3.

2ND ROUND: A sl st in next dc, ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, * 2 dc in next (ch 3) space, ch 4, skip next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc; repeat from * around, end with 2 dc in next (ch 3) space, ch 4, a sl st in top st of first ch 3.

3RD ROUND: A sl st in next dc, ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, * 2 dc in next (ch 4) space, ch 4, skip next dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc; repeat from * around, end with 2 dc in next (ch 4) space, ch 4, a sl st in top st of first ch 3.

4TH ROUND: A sl st in next dc, ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, * 3 dc in next (ch 4) space, ch 4, skip next dc, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc; repeat from * around, end with 3 dc in next (ch 4) space, ch 4, a sl st in top st of first ch 3.

5TH ROUND: A sl st in next dc, ch 3, a 5-joined dc over next 5 dc as follows: (thread over hook, draw up a loop in next dc, thread over hook and through 2 loops) 5 times, thread over hook and through all 6 loops on hook, * ch 5, 1 tr (thread twice around hook for a tr) in next (ch 4) space, ch 5, 1 tr in same space as last tr, ch 5, skip next dc, work a 6-joined dc over next 6 dc as follows; (thread over hook, draw up a loop in next dc, thread over hook and through 2 loops) 6 times, thread over hook and through all 7 loops on hook, ch 5, 1 sc in next space, ch 4, a sl st in last sc (this forms a picot), 1 sc in same space as last sc, ch 5, skip next dc, a 6-joined dc over next 6 dc; repeat from * around, end with ch 5, a sl st in first 5-joined dc.

6TH ROUND: A sl st in each of next 2 sts of (ch 5) space, 1 sc in same space as last sc, * ch 6, work a 3-joined tr petal st in next (ch 5) loop as follows: thread twice around hook, draw up a loop in next (ch 5) space, (thread over hook and through 2 loops) twice, (thread twice around hook, draw up a loop in same space as last loop, thread over hook and through 2 loops, over and through 2 loops) twice, thread over hook and through all 4 loops on hook, ch 3, a 3-joined tr petal in same space as last 3-joined tr petal, ch 6, 1 sc in next (ch 5) space, ch 6, skip next 6-joined dc st, 1 sc in next (ch 5) space, 5 dc in next picot, 1 sc in next (ch 5) space, ch 6, skip 6-joined dc st, 1 sc in next space; repeat from * around, end with ch 6, a sl st in first sc of round; break off.

Make 62 more squares in same manner.

HALF SQUARE – 1ST ROW: Ch 8, join with a sl st into a ring, ch 5, 3 dc into ring, * ch 3, 3 dc into ring; repeat from * twice, ch 2, 1 dc into ring; break off.

2ND ROW: Do not turn, join thread with a dc in 3rd st of first ch 5 of last row, ch 2, skip next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, * 2 dc in next (ch 3) space, ch 4, skip next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc; repeat from * across row, end with 2 dc in (ch 2) space, ch 2, 1 dc in end dc; break off.

3RD ROW: Do not turn, join thread with a dc in first dc of last row, ch 2, skip a dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, * 2 dc in next (ch 4) space, ch 4, skip next dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc; repeat from * across row, end with 2 dc in next (ch 2) space, ch 2, 1 dc in end dc; break off.

4TH ROW: Do not turn, join thread with a dc in first dc of last row, ch 2, skip a dc, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, * 3 dc in next (ch 4) space, ch 4, skip next dc, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc; repeat from * across row, end with 3 dc in next (ch 2) space, 1 dc in end dc; break off.

5TH ROW: Do not turn, join thread with a sl st in first (ch 2) space, ch 9, 1 tr in same space as sl st, ch 5, skip next dc, a 6-joined dc over next 6 dc, ch 5, (1 sc, a picot and 1 sc) in next (ch 4) space, ch 5, skip next dc, a 6-joined dc over next 6 dc, ch 5, (1 tr, ch 5 and 1 tr) in next (ch 4) space, ch 5, skip next dc, a 6-joined dc over next 6 dc, ch 5, (1 sc, a picot and 1 sc) in next (ch 4) space, ch 5, skip next dc, a 6-joined dc over next 6 dc, ch 5, (1 tr, ch 5 and 1 tr) in end dc; break off.

6TH ROW: Do not turn, join cotton with a sl st in first (ch 9) space, ch 4, (a 3-joined tr petal, ch 3 and a 3-joined tr petal) in same space as sl st, * (ch 6, 1 sc in next space) twice, 5 dc in next picot, 1 sc in next space, ch 6, 1 sc in next space, ch 6, (a 3-joined tr petal, ch 3 and a 3-joined tr petal) in next (ch 5) space; repeat from * once; break off. Make another half square in same manner.

JOINING OF SQUARES

Place squares as shown on Chart for Joining. Using same thread, fasten center st of corner ch loop (between 3 joined petals on first square – see 1 on Detail of Front) to corresponding st of corner ch loop on next square; break off. Tack 3-joined tr petal on first square (2 on Detail) to corresponding petal on next square. Skip next ch loop, tack center of next ch loop to corresponding st on next square (3 on Detail). Tack center dc of 5-dc group to corresponding dc of next square (4 on Detail). Tack center st of next ch loop to corresponding st of next square (5 on Detail). Skip next ch loop, tack 3-joined tr petal (6 on Detail) to corresponding petal on next square. Tack center st of next (ch 3) loop on first square to corres­ponding ch loop on next square (7 on Detail). Continue to join squares together to form fronts and back. Tack half of squares A and B on back section only; re­maining half of squares are to be joined to half of squares A and B on front sec­tions. Tack front and back sections together across shoulders from C to D and E to F. Tack underarms of back and front sections together.

BORDERS

FOR SLEEVES – 1ST ROUND: Join thread with an sc in joining of squares at un­derarm, * ch 6, skip 3-joined tr petal, 1 sc in next space, ch 6, skip next sc, 1 sc in next space, ch 6, 1 sc in center dc of 5-dc group, (ch 6, 1 sc in next space) twice, ch 6, 1 sc in joining of squares; repeat from * around, end with ch 6, a sl st in first sc of round.

2ND ROUND: Ch 3, 4 dc in same sc as sl st, * 1 sc in next (ch 6) loop, 5 dc in next sc; repeat from * around, end with 1 sc in next (ch 6) loop, a sl st in top st of first ch 3.

3RD ROUND: A sl st in dc, 1 sc in next dc, * ch 4, a sl st in last sc, 5 dc in next sc, skip 2 dc, 1 sc in next dc; repeat from * around, end with a sl st in first sc; break off.

SIZE 36-38

SQUARES (4½ Inches): Follow directions for Size 32-34. The difference in crochet hook and size of square will make the larger size.

SIZE 40-42

SQUARES (4¼ Inches): Make 94 squares and 2 half squares, following direc­tions for Size 32-34.

JOINING OF SQUARES: Place squares as shown on Chart for Joining of Squares and tack together same as for Size 32-34. Tack front and back sections together across shoulders and underarms.

BORDERS: Follow directions of Borders for Size 32-34.

SIZE 44-46

SQUARES (4½ Inches): Make 94 squares and 2 half squares, following direc­tions for Size 32-34.

The difference in crochet hook and size of square will make the larger size.

Follow directions of Joining of Squares and Borders for Size 40-42.

BLOCKING

Place jacket on a padded surface; cover with a damp cloth; steam (do not press) with a warm iron. Remove when dry.
