Cap, Sacque and Bootees Pattern #5046

There are slight variations to materials and instructions between these two versions of the same pattern in different publications. Two versions are below.

 

Spool Cotton #138, Woolies for Infants

INFANT SIZE

MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Wool, 2 balls (1 oz. balls) of any color for cap; 4 balls for sacque; 1 ball for bootees. Entire set requires 6 balls.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.
Ribbon: For cap—2½ yds. 1 inch wide, and ⅔ yd. ½ inch wide. For sacque—⅔ yd. 1 inch wide, and 1 yd. ½ inch wide. For bootees—1 yd. ¼ inch wide.

Gauge: S c section: Rows—8 s c make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch. Rnds—9 s c make 1 inch; 9 rnds make 1 inch.

Shell section: 2 shells make 1 inch; 3 rows of shells make 1 inch.

CAP No. 5046-A

Starting at tip of crown, ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 s c in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c. 3rd rnd: * S c in 1 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around. 4th rnd: * S c in next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around. 5th rnd: * S c in next 3 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around. Work s c's (1 more st between increases in each rnd) until piece measures 5 inches from side to side, ending with sl st. Now work loosely in rows instead of rnds. 1st row: * Skip 1 st, in next st make s c, d c and s c; skip 1 st, sl st in next st (a shell). Repeat from * across 5 sections (next section is back of cap). Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sl st to d c on next shell; * in sl st between shells make s c, d c and s c. Sl st in d c of next shell. Repeat from * across, ending with sl st in d c of last shell. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: In sl st make s c, d c and s c; sl st in d c of next shell. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until shell section measures 4 inches. Fasten off.

Cut ½-inch ribbon into a 13-inch piece and an 11-inch piece. Pass 13-inch piece through shells, about 1 inch in from outer front edge of cap, and sew in place. Pass 11-inch piece along back edge, easing in back edge if necessary, and sew. Cut two ½ yd. lengths of the 1-inch ribbon. Cut remaining 1-inch ribbon in half and make a rosette of each half. Sew a rosette at 1 end of each ½ yd. length of ribbon; sew to sides of cap.

SACQUE No. 5046-B

Starting at neck edge, ch 48 to measure about 6 inches. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in next ch, 3 s c in next ch (Left Front shoulder), s c in next 7 ch, 3 s c in next ch (Left Back shoulder), s c in next 25 ch, 3 s c in next ch (Right Back shoulder), s c in next 7 ch, 3 s c in next ch (Right Front shoulder), s c in next 2 ch. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in next ch (2 increases), s c in next 3 s c, 3 s c in next s c, * s c in s c to within center st of next 3-s c group, 3 s c in next s c. Repeat from * 2 more times, s c in next 3 s c, insert hook in s c where last s c was made, pull loop through; yarn over and pull through 1 loop, thus making a foundation ch; yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops (1 s c increased); insert hook in foundation ch just made and increase another s c in same way. Ch 3, turn. Continue increasing 2 s c at both ends of front edge and making 3 s c in center st of each 3-s c group for 6 rows. Now work as before, omitting increases at front edge, until piece measures 3 inches across each shoulder, ending row at Left Front edge. Do not break off.

LEFT FRONT … Work in shell pattern as for cap to within 3rd s c from next 3-s c group. Ch 1, turn. Now work 2 more rows straight. Next row: In 1st s c make s c, d c and s c; sl st in d c of 1st shell (a shell increased; this is underarm edge), and continue in pattern across, keeping front edge straight as for cap. Now work straight until shell section measures 4 inches. Next row: Work in pattern, increasing another shell at underarm edge. Now work straight until shell section measures 6½ inches. Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT … Work to correspond with Left Front.

BACK … Attach yarn to center s c of 3-s c group at right and work in pattern across to corresponding point at left. Work back and forth over this section, increasing at both edges as for Fronts. Fasten off.

SLEEVES … Attach yarn to center s c of 3-s c group at right of shoulder section, and work across to corresponding point at left. Work back and forth over this section until piece measures about 6 inches. Fasten off.

COLLAR … Starting at right edge, work 7 s c-rows along neck edge, increasing 7 sts on 3rd to 7th rows incl. (scatter increases). Next row: * Work 3 shells; in next s c (do not skip s c) make s c, d c and s c; sl st in next s c. Repeat from * around. Work 5 more rows of shells. Fasten off.

Cut ½-inch ribbon in half; pass ribbon through shells at wrist edge and tie in bow. Cut 1-inch ribbon in half and sew at neck edge.

BOOTEES No. 5046-C

Ch 45 to measure about 5 inches; join with sl st. Work in rnds of shell pattern for 2½ inches, joining and turning at end of each rnd (joining marks back of cuff) . Fasten off. Attach yarn to 4th st preceding center front at bottom of cuff and work a rnd of d c; join. Ch 1. Work upper as follows: 1st row: S c in next 8 sts. Ch 1, turn. Repeat this row for 1 inch. Fasten off. Attach yarn at center back and work a rnd of s c, making 3 s c in each corner s c. Make s c in each st around until upper measures 1 inch deep at side. Break off.

SOLES … Starting at center, ch 25 to measure 3 inches. 1st rnd: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each s c across, 3 s c in last s c. Working along opposite side of foundation ch, make s c in each ch across, 3 s c in last ch; join. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, d c in each s c, making 5 d c in center of each 3-s c group. 3rd and 4th rnds: Ch 3, d c in each d c, making 5 d c in center of each 5-d c group. Fasten off.

Place edges of sole and upper together and work s c closely together along edges, through both thicknesses. Pass ribbon through d c's.

Infant Size

MATERIALS:

CAP

Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in next ch (2 increases), s c in next 3 s c, 3 s c in next s c, * s c in s c to within center st of next 3-s c group, 3 s c in next s c. Repeat from * 2 more times, s c in next 3 s c, insert hook in s c where last s c was made, pull loop through; yarn over and pull through 1 loop, thus making a foundation ch; yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops (1 s c increased); insert hook in foundation ch just made and increase another s c in same way. Ch 3, turn. Continue increasing 2 s c at both ends of front edge and making 3 s c in center st of each 3-s c group for 4 rows. Now work as before, omitting increases at front edge, until piece measures 3 inches across each shoulder, ending row at Left Front edge. Do not break off.

LEFT FRONT … Work in shell pattern as for cap to within 3rd s c from next 3-s c group. Ch 1, turn. Now work 1 more row straight. Next row: Work in pattern to end of row, ending with sl st in d c of last shell; in next s c make s c, d c, s c and sl st (a shell increased; this is underarm edge). Ch 1, turn and continue in pattern across, keeping front edge straight as for cap. Now work straight until shell section measures 4 inches. Next row: Work in pattern, increasing another shell at underarm edge. Now work straight until shell section measures 6½ inches. Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT … Work to correspond with Left Front.

BACK … Attach yarn to center s c of 3-s c group at right and work in pattern across to corresponding point at left. Work back and forth over this section, increasing at both edges as for Fronts. Fasten off.

SLEEVES … Attach yarn to center s c of 3-s c group at right of shoulder section, and work across to corresponding point at left. Work back and forth over this section until piece measures about 6 inches. Fasten off.

COLLAR … Starting at right edge, work 6 s c-rows along neck edge, increasing 6 sts on 3rd to 7th rows incl. (scatter increases). Next row: * Work 3 shells; in next s c (do not skip s c) make s c, d c and s c; sl st in next s c. Repeat from * around. Work 5 more rows of shells. Fasten off.

Cut ½-inch ribbon in half; pass ribbon through shells at wrist edge and tie in bow. Cut 1-inch ribbon in half and sew at neck edge.

BOOTEES

Ch 39 to measure about 5 inches; join with sl st. Work in rnds of shell pattern for 2½ inches, joining and turning at end of each rnd (joining marks back of cuff). Fasten off. Attach yarn to 4th st preceding center front at bottom of cuff, ch 3 and work a rnd of d c; join. Ch 1. Work upper as follows: 1st row: S c in next 8 sts. Ch 1, turn. Repeat this row for 1 inch. Fasten off. Attach yarn at bottom of center back and work a rnd of s c, making 3 s c in each corner s c. Make s c in each st around until upper measures 1 inch deep at side. Break off.

SOLES … Starting at center, ch 21 to measure 3 inches. 1st rnd: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each s c across, 3 s c in last s c. Working along opposite side of foundation ch, make s c in each ch across, 3 s c in last ch; join. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, d c in each s c, making 5 d c in center of each 3-s c group. 3rd and 4th rnds: Ch 3, d c in each d c, making 5 d c in center of each 5-d c group. Fasten off.
   Place edges of sole and upper together and work s c closely together along edges, through both thicknesses. Pass ribbon through d c's.
