MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Wool, 1 ball (1 oz. ball) of any color.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 3.
½ yd. narrow ribbon.

Gauge: 6 star sts make 1 inch; 4½ rnds make 1 inch.

Starting at bottom, ch 28, join with sl st. 1st rnd: Insert hook in same place as sl st and draw loop through; (insert hook in next ch and draw loop through) 3 times; yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook, ch 1 (a star st made). * Insert hook in single loop of ch-1 and draw loop through; insert hook under last loop of star st and draw loop through; insert hook in same place where this last loop was drawn through and draw loop through; insert hook in next ch and draw loop through; yarn over and draw through all 5 loops, ch 1. Repeat from * around (25 star sts). 2nd rnd: Insert hook in single loop of ch-1 just made and draw loop through; insert hook under last loop of last star st and draw loop through; insert hook where this last loop was drawn through and draw loop through; insert hook in ch-1 of next star st and draw loop through; yarn over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 (1st star st of 2nd rnd completed). * Insert hook in ch-1 just made and draw loop through; insert hook under last loop of last star st and draw loop through; insert hook where this last loop was drawn through and draw loop through; insert hook in top loop of star st below and draw loop through; yarn over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 (a star st increased); now make 2 star sts same as 1st star st on this rnd. Repeat from * around (38 star sts). Work without increasing, making star st over each star st, until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st rnd. Sl st to top loop of next star st.

EDGING … 1st rnd: * Ch 5, skip 1 star st, s c in top loop of next star st. Repeat from * around (19 loops). 2nd rnd: Sl st to center of next loop, * ch 5, s c in next loop. Repeat from * around. 3rd rnd: Sl st to center of next loop, * ch 3, d c in next loop, ch 3, s c in 1st ch of ch-3 just made (p); d c in same loop where last d c was made, p, d c in same loop, ch 3, s c in next loop. Repeat from * around. Fasten off. Pass ribbon through the 2nd rnd of loops, and tie.
