Hot Plate Mats Pattern #4516

Materials Required – AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "STAR" PEARL COTTON, ARTICLE 90, SIZE 5
18-50 Yd. Balls, White or Colors.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 5.
Mats are worked with a Double Thread.

Oval Mat. Ch 36, 2 s c in 2nd st from hook, 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 30 sts of ch, 2 s c in next ch, 3 s c in end ch. Working on other side of ch, 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 30 sts, 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in same space with first 2 sts, join. Work 3 more rows increasing at ends as necessary to keep work flat.

5th Row. Ch 3, 3 d c in same space, drop loop off hook, insert in 3rd st of ch and pull loop through from back forming a popcorn st, * 1 d c in each of the next 3 s c, 4 d c in next st, drop loop off hook, insert in 1st d c and pull loop through, repeat from * all around increasing as necessary at ends to keep work flat, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, join.

6th Row. Same as 5th row having the popcorn sts between popcorn sts of previous row.

7th Row. Same as 5th row.

8th, 9th, 10th and 11th Rows. Work in s c increasing as necessary at ends to keep work flat. Repeat 5th, 6th and 7th rows, then repeat 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th rows.

Next Row. Popcorn st in next st, 1 d c in each of the next 2 s c, repeat from beginning all around.

Small Mats. Ch 6, join and work 9 s c into ring. Work 4 more rows in s c increasing as necessary to keep work flat, then work same as large mat increasing a sufficient number of times to keep work flat.

With a single strand of thread finish edges with a shell. Ch 3, 3 d c in same space, * skip 1 st, s c in next st, ch 3, 3 d c in same space, repeat from * all around ending row with skip 1 st, join.
