Cap, Bootees, and Mittens Set Pattern #5345

Infant Size

MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Wool, 4 balls (¾ oz. balls) of White and 1 ball of Baby Blue … Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Crochet Hook No. 3.

GAUGE: 6½ sc make 1 inch; 6½ rows make 1 inch.

CAP

BACK PIECE … Starting at center with White, ch 10. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 23 dc in ring. Sl st in 3rd ch of ch-3. 2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, sc in each dc around. Now make sc in each sc around, increasing as necessary to keep work flat, until piece measures 5¼ inches in diameter. Sl st in next sc. Break off.

SIDE PIECE … Make a chain 13½ inches long. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: Dc in 3rd sc, * ch 1, skip 1 sc, dc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: * Sc in next dc, sc in next sp. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last sp, sc in next ch of turning chain. Ch 4, turn. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until piece measures 4¾ inches, ending with an sc row. Next row: Attach Blue, sc in same place, * skip 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc, skip 2 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Break off. Turn up last inch of Side Piece to form a band and tack ends in place. Pin opposite long edge of Side Piece to Back Piece, leaving 2½ inches free for back of neck. Working over both thicknesses with Blue, join Side to Back Piece with sc. With double strand, make 2 chains (1 Blue and 1 White) each ½ yard long. Make a rosette of these chains. Make another rosette same as this. Sew rosette to each side of Cap. Make 2 more White chains as before, each ½ yard long. Knot one end of each chain. Sew opposite end of each chain under rosettes. Tie into a bow.

BOOTEES

UPPER … Starting at center of Toe Piece with White, ch 10. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 23 dc in ring. Sl st to 3rd ch of ch 3. 2nd rnd: Ch 1, 2 sc in next 12 dc, sc in next dc, ch 40. 3rd rnd: Sc in each sc around Toe Piece, sc in each ch. 4th to 11th rnds incl: Sc in each sc around. At end of 11th rnd, sl st in next sc. Break off.

CUFF … Attach White in the 5th ch from Toe Piece (right side facing) and ch 4. 1st row: * Skip next st, dc in next st, ch 1. Repeat from * around to within 4 ch from opposite side of Toe Piece. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in next dc, * sc in next sp, sc in next dc. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in sp, sc in 3rd ch of ch-4. Ch 4, turn. 3rd row: Skip next 2 sc, * dc in next sc, ch 1, skip next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 4th rnd: Sc in next dc, * sc in next sp, sc in next dc. Repeat from * across, now sc along remaining edges (side of Cuff and Toe Piece). Sl st in first sc. Break off. 5th rnd: With right side facing, attach Blue to first sc on last rnd of Cuff, sc in same place, * skip next 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc, skip next 2 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * along top of Cuff. Now make sc across remaining edges. Join and break off.

SOLE … With White, ch 20 to measure 3¼ inches. 1st rnd: 3 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 2 ch, half dc in next ch, sc in next 2 ch, half dc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, tr in next 6 ch, 9 tr in last ch; working along opposite side of starting chain, make tr in next 6 ch, dc in next 3 ch, half dc in next ch, sc in next 2 ch, half dc in next ch, dc in next 2 ch, 4 dc in same place where first 3 dc were made. Sl st to 3rd ch of turning chain. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Sc in each st around, increasing as necessary to keep work flat around curves—to inc 1 sc, make 2 sc in 1 st. Join and break off. Pin Sole in place on Upper.
   Working through both thicknesses with Blue (Upper facing), make sc in each sc around. Join and break off.

CHAIN CORD … With double strand of Blue, make a chain 14 inches long. Lace chain through lower dc row of Cuff and tie in a bow at side.

TASSEL (Make 2) ... Cut a piece of cardboard 1½ inches wide and 3 inches long. Place a 5-inch piece of Blue yarn across length of cardboard. Wind Blue 30 times around width of cardboard. Tie strands with the 5-inch length. Remove cardboard. Wind a strand of Blue several times around ¼ inch from top (where strands were tied). Cut opposite ends and trim. Sew a Tassel at each end of chain.

MITTENS

With White ch 5. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 23 dc in ring. Sl st to 3rd ch of ch-3 (24 dc, counting ch-3 as 1 dc). 2nd rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, * sc in next dc, 2 sc in next dc. Repeat from * around (36 sc). 3rd to 25th rnds incl: Sc in each sc around. 26th rnd: Ch 4, * skip next sc, dc in next sc, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-4 (18 sps). 27th rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, * 2 sc in next sp, sc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Sl st in first sc. 28th rnd: Work as for 26th rnd (27 sps). 29th rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * sc in next sp, sc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off (54 sts). 30th rnd: Attach Blue, sc in same place as yarn was attached, * skip next 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc, skip next 2 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

CORD … With double strand of Blue, make a chain 10 inches long and lace through first rnd of beading. Tie into a bow. Make 2 Tassels as for Bootees and sew one to each end of chain.
