Sacque, Cap, Bootees, and Mittens Set Pattern #5340

Infant Size 1 (Chest = 20 inches)

MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Wool, 5 balls (¾ oz. balls) of White and 1 ball of Baby Blue … Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Crochet Hooks Sizes 3 and 9 … 2 small pearl buttons for bootees ... 3 yards of ribbon, ⅝ inch wide … 1 yard of ribbon, ¼ inch wide.

GAUGE: Yoke (with No. 3 hook) 7 sts make 1 inch; 5 rows make 1 inch.

SACQUE

Starting at base of Yoke at back, with White and No. 3 hook, make a chain 10 inches long (7 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: Sc in 3rd ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across, ending with sc. Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: * Sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last sp formed by turning chain. Ch 2, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until piece measures 3 inches.

To Shape Neck: Mark the center of last row with a pin. Work in pattern as established to within 1½ inches from pin mark. Ch 2, turn. Work in pattern over this section only for ½ inch, ending at outer edge. Ch 2, turn. Next row: Work in pattern across, ending with sc in last sp, ch 1, sc in next ch of turning chain (1 sp increased). Ch 2, turn. Following row: Sc in first sc (1 sp increased), * ch 1, sc in next sp. Repeat from * across. Ch 2, turn. Next row: Work in pattern across, increasing 1 sp at end of row as before. Ch 7, turn. Following row: Sc in 3rd ch from hook, (ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch) twice; * ch 1, sc in next sp. Repeat from * across. Ch 2, turn. Continue working in pattern without increasing until piece measures 6 inches in all. Break off.
   Attach Blue and work 1 row in pattern. Break off. Attach White and work in pattern across. Ch 3, turn. Change to No. 9 hook and work in pattern across, making ch 2 (instead of ch-1) between sc's and ch 3 to turn at end of each row, until piece measures 9¼ inches from first row of neck shaping. Break off. Work other Front to correspond.

BACK … Attach yarn to starting chain and, with No. 3 hook, work 1 row in pattern as for Yoke. Break off. Now work 1 row in White, making ch 3 to turn. Change to No. 9 hook and work in pattern across, making ch 2 (instead of ch-1) between sc's and ch 3 to turn at end of each row, until piece measures 9¼ inches from first row of neck shaping.

COLLAR ... 1st row: With No. 3 hook, attach White to second ch-1 sp at neck edge and make sc closely along neck edge to corresponding place at opposite edge. Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: * Sc in next sc, ch 1. Repeat from * across. Ch 2, turn. 3rd, 4th and 5th rows: * Sc in next sp, ch 1. Repeat from * across. Ch 2, turn. Break off at end of 5th row.

SLEEVES … Starting at top with White and No. 9 hook, make a chain 6½ inches long and work in pattern as for lower part of Sacque, making ch 2 between sc's and ch 3 to turn until piece measures 6½ inches. Ch 2 to turn at end of last row. Change to No. 3 hook and work 2 rows in pattern as for Yoke (ch 1 between sc's and ch 2 to turn). Break off. Sew side seams, leaving the 3¼ inches at top free for armhole. Sew up sleeve seams and sew in sleeves.

BORDER … With No. 3 hook and Blue, work in Yoke pattern all along outer edges of Sacque including Collar, making sc, ch 1 and sc in each corner. Join and break off. Attach White and work another rnd in Yoke pattern all around, making sc, ch 1 and sc in each corner. Join and break off. Work 1 row of Blue and 1 row of White as for Yoke on outer sleeve edges. Break off. With double strand of Blue make a chain 1 yard long. Pass this chain through the spaces of the 2nd row of Collar.

TASSEL (Make 2) ... Cut a piece of cardboard 2½ inches wide and 5 inches long. Wind a strand of Blue 50 times around width of cardboard. Cut strands at one end. Remove cardboard. Tie a strand several times around ¼ inch from looped end of strands. Trim ends. Sew a tassel at each end of chain. Tie chain into a bow.

CAP

BACK PIECE … Starting at center with White, ch 5. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 1, 10 sc in ring. 2nd rnd: * Ch 1, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. 3rd rnd: * Ch 1, sc in next sp. Repeat from * around. Repeat 3rd rnd, increasing as necessary to keep work flat until piece measures 5 inches in diameter—to inc, make sc, ch 1 and sc in same sp. Break off at end of last rnd.

SIDE … Starting at one long side, make a chain 13½ inches long and work in pattern as for Yoke of Sacque until piece measures 5½ inches. Break off. Next row: With Blue work in pattern across. Break off. Following row: With White work in pattern across. Break off. Pin Side to Back Piece, leaving 3 inches free on Back Piece (for back of neck). With Blue join Side to Back Piece, making sc through both thicknesses. Break off. Work sc closely along neck edge. Turn over 1½ inches to form a band and tack ends in place. Cut two 15-inch lengths of the ⅝-inch wide ribbon. Cut remaining ribbon in half and make a rosette of each half. Sew one 15-inch length and one rosette to each side of Cap.

BOOTEES

UPPERToe Piece … With White and No. 3 hook, work as for Back Piece of Cap until 3rd rnd is completed. Break off. 4th rnd: Attach Blue to any sc, ch 1, sc in same place, * 2 sc in next sp, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. Now continue Upper as follows: 1st rnd: With White ch 19, sc in a Blue sc on last rnd of Toe Piece, (ch 1, sc in next sc) 16 times; ch 18. Sl st in first ch (this is center back). 2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across chain, ending with sc in last ch, ** ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp. Repeat from ** across the ch-1 sps and work across remaining chain as before, ending with ch 1, sl st in first sc. 3rd to 9th rnds incl: Sl st in next sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, * ch 1, sc in next sp. Repeat from * around. Join. Break off at end of 9th rnd.

SOLE … Starting at center with White, ch 20 (to measure 3¼ inches). 1st rnd: 3 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 2 ch, half dc in next ch, sc in next 2 ch, half dc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, tr in next 6 ch, 9 tr in last ch; now, working along opposite side of starting chain, make tr in next 6 ch, dc in next 3 ch, half dc in next ch, sc in next 2 ch, half dc in next ch, dc in each remaining ch across, making 3 dc where first 3 dc were made. Sl st in top of starting chain. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Sc in each st around, increasing as necessary at curved ends to keep work flat—to inc 1 sc, make 2 sc in same st. Join. Break off at end of 3rd rnd.
   Pin Sole in place. With Blue, join Sole to Upper by working sc through both thicknesses. Join and break off.

STRAP … Starting at center with White, ch 39 (to measure 6 inches). Sc in 3rd ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across, ch 5; now, working along opposite side of starting chain, ** sc at base of next sc, ch 1. Repeat from ** across. Sl st in turning chain. Break off. Sew button at end opposite the ch-5 loop. Sew Strap in place at back so that it buttons at outer side.

MITTENS

With White and No. 3 hook, work as for Back Piece of Cap until 3rd rnd is completed. 4th rnd: Repeat 3rd rnd. Break off. 5th rnd: Attach Blue at any sc, ch 1, sc in same place, * 2 sc in next sp, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Break off. Now continue as follows: 1st rnd: With White, * sc in next sc, ch 1, skip next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. 2nd rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, * ch 1, sc in next sp. Repeat from * around. Join. Repeat the last rnd until piece measures 2½ inches from Blue rnd.

BEADINGNext rnd: Ch 4, dc in next sp, * ch 1, dc in next sp. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1, sl st to 3rd ch of ch-4. Following rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, * 2 sc in next sp, sc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join. Next rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, * ch 1, skip next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. Following rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, * ch 1, sc in next sp. Repeat from * around. Join. Repeat the last rnd until piece measures 1¼ inches from Beading. Break off. Next rnd: Attach Blue to any sp, * sc in next sc, 2 sc in sp. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. Cut narrow ribbon in half. Pass a piece of ribbon through Beading of each mitten.
