Shell Stitch Sacque, Cap, and Bootees Set Pattern #5343

Infant Size (Chest = 20 inches)

MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Pompadour, 8 balls (¾ oz. balls) … Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Crochet Hook No. 3 … 3 small pearl buttons … 3 yards of pink ribbon, ⅝ inch wide … 1 yard of pink ribbon, ⅜ wide.

GAUGE: 2 shells make 1¼ inches.

SACQUE

Starting at lower edge of back, make a chain 12 inches long. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook, * skip 1 ch, sc in next ch, skip 1 ch, 3 dc in next ch (shell made). Repeat from * until row measures 9½ inches, ending with an sc. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Dc in back loop of next sc, * sc in center dc of next shell, shell in back loop of next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until piece measures 6½ inches. Make a chain 7 inches long (for sleeve). Attach a separate piece of yarn at opposite end and make a chain 6½ inches long (for other sleeve). Break off. Resume work with main yarn and work in pattern across entire row, ending with sc. Ch 3, turn. Work in shell pattern over entire row until piece measures 3¼ inches from first sleeve row.

To Shape Neck: Mark the center of last row with a pin. Work in pattern to within 1½ inches from pin mark, ending with sc. Ch 3, turn and work in pattern over this section only for 1¼ inches, ending at neck edge. Ch 15, turn. Next row: Dc in 4th ch from hook, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch, skip 1 ch, shell in next ch and work in pattern across remainder of row. Ch 3, turn. Continue working in pattern until sleeve section measures 6½ inches in all, ending at front edge. Ch 3, turn. Next row: Work in shell pattern to within sleeve sts, ending with sc. Ch 3, turn. Work over this section only (this is Front) until piece measures 6½ inches from last sleeve row. Break off. Work other side to correspond. Work 4 rows of sc along each sleeve edge, holding work in to measure 5 inches. Break off. Sew up side and sleeve seams.

BORDER ... 1st row: Attach yarn to left neck edge and work sc closely all around outer edges of Sacque to opposite neck edge, making 3 sc in each corner. Ch 1, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Sc in each sc, making 3 sc in center sc of each 3-sc group and making three ch-5 buttonloops at top of right front on 4th row. Break off.

COLLAR … Attach yarn at neck edge in end sc on first row of Border and sc closely along neck edge to corresponding point on opposite side. Ch 1, turn. 2nd to 6th rows incl: Sc in each sc across, increasing 4 sc evenly in each row. Ch 1, turn. Break off at end of 6th row. Sew on buttons to correspond with loops.

CAP

Starting at back of neck, make a chain 4½ inches long. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 4 inches. Ch 27. Attach a separate piece of yarn at opposite end and ch 25. Break off. Resume work with main yarn and work across entire row in shell pattern as follows: 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook, * skip 1 st, sc in next st, skip 1 st, 3 dc in next st (shell). Repeat from * across entire row, ending with sc. Ch 3, turn. Work in shell st pattern as for Sacque until piece measures 5 inches from last row of sc-section. Break off.
   Sew sides of sc-section to starting chains of side piece. Turn back 1 inch to form band and tack in place. Now work along lower edge as follows: 1st row: Make a row of sc across, holding work in to fit. 2nd row: Ch 4, tr in next sc, * ch 1, skip 1 sc, tr in next 2 sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in each tr and in each sp across, sc in top of turning chain. Break off. With the wider ribbon make a ribbon trimming and tack in place at edge of band. Make 2 small ribbon bows and sew one to each side of Cap. Pass remaining ribbon through beading and tie into a bow.

BOOTEES

SOLE ... Ch 17 to measure 2¼ inches. 1st rnd: 3 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 3 ch, half dc in next ch, sc in next 2 ch, half dc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, tr in next 2 ch, 9 tr in last ch; working along opposite side of starting chain, make tr in next 2 ch, dc in next 3 ch, half dc in next ch, sc in next 2 ch, half dc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, 4 dc in last ch, sl st to 3rd ch of turning chain. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Sc in each st around, increasing around curves as necessary to keep work flat—to inc 1 sc, make 2 sc in 1 st. At the end of the 3rd rnd, join and break off.

TOE PIECE … Ch 14. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook, * skip next ch, sc in next ch, skip next ch, 3 dc in next ch. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last ch. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Dc in sc, * sc in 2nd dc of shell, 3 dc in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 3rd, 4th and 5th rows: Repeat 2nd row. At the end of the 5th row, ch 18. Break off. Attach yarn to turning chain at beginning of 5th row and ch 19, turn.

UPPER ... 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, sc along each side of Toe Piece, making 3 sc at corners, sc in each ch of ch 18. Ch 1, turn. 2nd to 7th rows incl: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Break off at end of 7th row. Sew up back seam. Pin sole to Upper. With Upper facing and working through both thicknesses, make sc in each st around. Join and break off.

CUFF … Attach yarn to center back at top of Upper and ch 5. 1st rnd: * Skip 2 sts, dc in next st, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join. 2nd rnd: Sc in each st around. Join. 3rd rnd: * Skip next sc, 3 dc in next sc, skip next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with sc. 4th rnd: * Sc in center dc of next shell, 3 dc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. Cut narrow ribbon in half. Lace a piece of ribbon through beading. Tie into a bow.
