MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 4 balls of White and 7 balls of Color.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 6.

Cloth measures 36 x 36 inches, excluding fringe.

GAUGE: 10 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.

Starting at one edge with Color, make a 39-inch chain (about 10 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: In order to conceal it, hold White on top of chain, work sc over it in 2nd ch from hook and in next 6 ch; * insert hook in next ch and pull loop through, drop Color, pick up White and draw through both loops on hook, thus changing color. Holding Color on top of chain, work sc over it in each of the next 7 ch, insert hook in next ch and pull loop through, drop White, pick up Color and draw through both loops on hook. Holding White on top of chain, work sc over it in each of next 7 ch. Repeat from * across until there are 23 Color groups and 22 White groups. Fasten off, leaving 4-inch lengths of both colors. These lengths will be used later for Fringe. 2nd row: Leaving 4-inch lengths of both colors free, attach threads in 1st sc of last row. Working over unused color in order to conceal it and changing color as before, ch 1 and make Color sc in back loop of each Color sc and White sc in back loop of each White sc across. Fasten off, leaving 4-inch lengths of both colors. Repeat 2nd row 4 more times. This completes 1st row of blocks. Next row: Work as before only make White sc's over Color sc's and Color sc's over White sc's. Work 5 more rows in pattern as established by last row. This completes 2nd row of blocks. Continue thus, alternating 1st and 2nd rows of blocks until piece is square, ending with 1st row of blocks. Fasten off.

FRINGE … There are two 4-inch lengths (1 White and 1 Color) at both ends of each row. Insert hook at base of an sc on one edge and pull a loop (both lengths) through. Draw free ends through this loop and pull tight. Work each set of 4-inch lengths in this manner. To make Fringe on the 2 remaining edges, cut one 8-inch length of Color. Fold this length in half, insert hook from right side in corner st and pull Color loop through; draw one free end through loop and pull tight. * Take an 8-inch length of White and fold in half, insert hook in next st and pull a loop consisting of the remaining end of previous Color length and this White length through, then draw the Color strand and 1 strand of White through this loop. Take an 8-inch length of Color and fold in half, insert hook in next st and pull loop consisting of the remaining end of previous White length and this Color length through, then draw the White strand and 1 strand of Color through this loop. Repeat from * across. Then work Fringe on remaining edge. Trim all Fringe to measure 2 inches. Press through damp cloth.
