MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 7 balls of Light and 9 balls of Dark.

The above amount of material is sufficient for 4 place mats, each 10½ x 16 inches, and a runner of the same size.

GAUGE: Each motif measures 1⅞ inches in diameter. Use thread double throughout.

PLACE MAT (Make 4) … Motif: 1st rnd: Starting at center with Light, ch 4, work 15 dc in 1st ch made. Sl st in top st of starting chain. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in each dc around (32 dc). Join and fasten off. 3rd rnd: Attach Dark at joining and work sc in each st around. Do not join, but make sc's all around, working sc's in base of sc's of previous rnd. Join and fasten off.
     Make 43 more motifs exactly like this. Now make 10 motifs using only Dark. Arrange Dark motifs in 2 rows of 5 motifs each. Join them by sewing the outside loop of 3 corresponding sts together. Now sew 2 rows of two-color motifs around this Dark center. Make 5 pieces; use one for a runner.
