Such a rollicking tea cloth, this! A fairy-tale border of squirrels and birds to give it an enchanted look and make tea time sparkle with charm.

MATERIALS:
CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS BIG BALL BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, size 30,
Clark's O.N.T.—8 balls of White or Ecru,
or
J. & P. Coats—8 balls of White or Ecru, or 11 balls of any color.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 10.
1 yard linen, 36 inches wide.

GAUGE: 5 sps make 1 inch; 5 rows make 1 inch. When completed, tea cloth measures about 44 inches square.

Starting at bottom of chart, make a chain about 60 inches long. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook and in next 26 ch (28 d c, counting the turning ch as 1 d c)—9 bls made; * (ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch) 5 times—5 sps made; d c in next 15 ch—5 bls made. Repeat from * 8 more times; then make 5 sps, d c in next 48 ch—16 bls made. Make (5 sps, 5 bls) 9 times; 5 sps, then make d c in next 27 ch. Ch 3, turn. Cut off remaining ch. 2nd row: D c in next 3 d c—bl made; ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in next d c—sp made over bl. Make 3 more sps, d c in next 12 d c, then 2 d c in next sp, d c in next d c—bl made over sp. Make 5 more bls; then make (3 sps, 7 bls) 9 times; 3 sps, 8 bls, (3 sps, 7 bls) 9 times; 3 sps, 10 bls, 4 sps, d c in next 2 d c and in top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn.

NOTE: Chart shows ¼ of design. To make second half of each row, repeat the first half, starting from center and working back.

   Starting with 3rd row, follow chart until 9th row is completed. Ch 5, turn. 10th row: Skip 2 d c, d c in next 4 d c, and continue to follow chart across, ending with ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in top of turning ch. Ch 5, turn. 11th row: D c in next 4 d c, and continue to follow chart across, ending with ch 2, d c in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 5, turn. Continue to follow chart until 50th row is completed. Ch 5, turn. 51st row: (1 sp, 1 bl) 3 times; 3 sps, 1 bl, 13 sps, 1 bl, 4 sps, 12 bls, 9 sps, 1 bl. Ch 3, turn. Starting with 52nd row, follow chart to top; then reverse chart and work back to 52nd row incl. (123 short rows). Fasten off. Count 49 bls and sps in from opposite side, attach thread to 4th d c of next bl, and work to correspond, working back to 51st row (not 52nd) incl. (124 short rows). Do not fasten off, but ch 401 and complete 51st row at opposite side. Then follow chart to 1st row, working across chain. Fasten off.
   Cut linen into a square to fit in center of lace, allowing for narrow hem. Hem linen and sew to lace.
