Sacque, Cap, and Bootees Set Pattern #5344

Infant Size 1 (Chest = 20 inches)

MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Wool, 8 balls (¾ oz. balls) of Baby Blue … Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Crochet Hook No. 4 ... 2½ yards of blue ribbon, ¾ inch wide … Buttons.

GAUGE: 5 clusters make 2 inches; 2 cluster-rows and the sc-row between make 1 inch.

SACQUE

Starting at lower edge of Back, make a chain 12 inches long. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across until row measures 9½ inches, ending with an sc. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in back loop of first sc, * holding back on hook the last loop of each dc make 2 dc in next ch-1 sp, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made), sc in back loop of next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in first sc, * ch 1, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. The 2nd and 3rd rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 2 rows alternately until piece measures 6½ inches, ending with the 2nd row. Make a chain 6½ inches long (for sleeve). Attach a separate piece of yarn at opposite end of row and make a chain 6½ inches long. Break off. Resume work with main yarn and work in pattern as established across entire row. Ch 1, turn. Continue in pattern until piece measures 3¼ inches from first sleeve row.

To Shape Neck: Mark the center of last row with a pin. Work in pattern to within 1½ inches from pin mark, ending with sc. Ch 1, turn and work in pattern over this section only for 1½ inches, ending at neck edge. Ch 13, turn. Next row: Work in pattern across. Ch 1, turn. Continue in pattern until sleeve section measures 6½ inches in all, ending at Front edge. Ch 1, turn. Next row: Work in pattern to within sleeve sts. Ch 1, turn. Work over this section only (this is Front) until piece measures 6½ inches from last sleeve row. Break off. Work other side to correspond.
   Work 4 rows of sc along each sleeve edge, holding work in to measure 5 inches. Sew up side and sleeve seams.

BORDER ... 1st row: Attach yarn to left neck edge and work sc closely all around outer edges of Sacque to opposite neck edge, making 3 sc in each corner. Ch 1, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Sc in each sc, making 3 sc in center sc of each 3-sc group and making three ch-5 loops at top of Right Front on 4th row. Break off.

COLLAR … Attach yarn at neck edge in end sc on first row of Border and sc closely along neck edge to corresponding point on opposite side. Ch 1, turn. 2nd to 6th rows incl: Sc in each sc across, increasing 4 sc evenly in each row. Ch 1, turn. Break off at end of 6th row.
   Sew buttons to correspond with loops.

CAP

BACK PIECE … Starting at center, ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around (6 sc increased). 3rd rnd: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc (1 sc increased). Repeat from * around. Continue thus, making sc in each sc and increasing 6 sc in each rnd until piece measures 5 inches in diameter.

SIDE PIECE … Make a chain 13½ inches long and work in pattern as for Sacque until piece measures 5 inches deep. Pin starting chain of Side Piece to Back Piece, leaving 2½ inches free for neck edge. Working over both thicknesses, join the 2 pieces with sc. Break off. Sc closely along neck edge, holding it in to fit.
   Turn back 1 inch of Side Piece to form band. Overcast edge of band with ribbon. Make 2 rosettes and sew one to each side of Cap. Cut remaining ribbon in half for ties. Sew a tie to each side of Cap.

UPPER … Starting at top of Upper, ch 55 (to measure 8½ inches). Join with sl st to form a ring. 1st rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, sc in each ch around, sl st in first sc. 2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, (ch 1, sc in next sc) 20 times (this is front section), * ch 1, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Sl st in first sc. 3rd rnd: Turn, ch 1, sc in back loop of sc where sl st was made, * cluster in next ch-1 sp, sc in back loop of next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. 4th rnd: Turn, ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, * ch 1, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. 5th to 8th rnds incl: Repeat 3rd and 4th rnds alternately. 9th rnd: Make 1 sc in the 20 sps along front edge and 2 sc in each remaining sp around. Join. 10th rnd: (Work off 2 sts as 1 sc) 10 times, sc in each remaining sc around, working off (2 sc as 1 sc) 5 times along heel section. Join. 11th rnd: Sc in each st around. Join. Sew the 2 halves of last rnd together, thus forming sole.

TOP CIRCULAR PIECE … Starting at center, ch 2. 1st rnd: 9 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 3rd rnd: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. 4th and 5th rnds: Sc in each sc around. Sl st in next sc. Break off. Sew this piece in place at front.

STRAP … Ch 40 (to measure 5½ inches). Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, ch 5 (for loop). Now, working along opposite side of starting chain, sc in each ch across. Sl st in first sc. Break off.
   Sew button in place. Sew strap to top of heel section, having it button at outer side.
