MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN," Art. A.64: 1 ball of No. 9 Yellow; and
J. & P. Coats Tatting-Crochet, Art. A.21, Size 70: 2 balls of No. 12 Black; and
J. & P. Coats Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, Art. A. 104, Size 30: 1 ball each of White and No. 123-A Fla­mingo.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hooks No. 7 and No. 10.

A doll 8 inches tall, chest 4 ½ inches.
SKIRT ... Starting at waist with Flamingo and No. 10 hook, make a chain slightly longer than doll's waist measurement. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Drop Flamingo. Use Black Tatting double throughout. Attach Black to last dc made and work in rnds as follows: 1st rnd: Ch 3, dc in same dc, 2 dc in each dc around. Join with sl st to top of ch-3 (back opening). Drop Black, pick up Flamingo. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc around, increasing as necessary to keep work flat—to inc 1 dc, make 2 dc in 1 dc. Join. Repeat 2nd rnd, making 1 rnd each of Black and Flamingo alternately until 14 stripes in all have been made. Break off.

BODICE ... 1st row: Attach Black to first st on starting chain of skirt. Sc in same place, sc in each ch across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip first sc, dc in each sc across. 3rd row: With Flamingo, sc in each st across. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Repeat 2nd row. Con­tinue working in this manner, making 2 rows of each color until 4 stripes have been made. With Black repeat 3rd row. Place a pin at center of last row. Next row: Skip first sc, dc in next sc and in each sc across to within 5 sc of marker, half dc in next sc, sc in next 9 sc, half dc in next sc, dc in each remaining sc. Ch 1, turn. Following row: Sc in each st across. Break off.

To Shape Shoulder: Leaving ½ inch free on last row at back opening, attach Black to next sc. 1st row: Sc in same sc and in next 6 sc. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across to within last 2 sc, dec 1 sc—to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc (neck edge). Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Dec 1 sc, sc in each remaining sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows once more. Work without decreasing until piece is long enough to reach across shoulder to front. Break off. Sew in place. Work other shoulder in same way. Attach Black to first sc at back opening and sc closely around neck. Break off.

SLEEVE ... Attach Black to any st on armhole edge. 1st rnd: Sc closely around. Join. 2nd rnd: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in each sc around. Join. 4th and 5th rnds: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join. 6th rnd: Ch 3, * dec 1 dc—to dec 1 dc, work off .2 dc as 1 dc—dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join. Repeat last rnd until sleeve opening measures ½ inch in diameter or small enough to fit doll's arm. Work other sleeve the same way. Sew 2 snap fasteners in place at back.

HAT ... Starting at center with Yellow and No. 7 hook, ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join. 2nd rnd: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 1, * 2 sc in next sc (1 sc increased), sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. 4th and 5th rnds: Sc in each sc around, increasing 6 sc evenly on each rnd. 6th rnd: Working in back loop only, sc in each sc around. Join. 7th to 11th rnds incl: Sc in each sc around, increasing 3 sc evenly around. Join.

BRIM ... 1st row: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc across to within last 6 sc. Ch 1, turn. 2nd to 8th rows incl: Skip first sc, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Now work in short rows as follows: 1st to 6th rows incl: Skip first sc, sc in each sc across to within last 5 sc. Ch 1, turn. Now sc closely around edge of Brim and back of Hat. Join and break off. Shirr narrow lace and sew under brim. Sew a 2-inch piece of floral braid to center of velvet ribbon. Sew narrow velvet ribbon to front part of crown and tie under chin in a bow.

PANTALOONS ... Starting at waist with White and No. 10 hook, make a chain long enough to reach around waist. Join to first ch. 1st rnd: Ch 3, dc in each ch around. Join. 2nd to 8th rnds incl: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join. Fold in half, having an even amount of sts free on each side for leg openings. Ch 11, sl st in op­posite side of piece for crotch.

Now work leg as follows: 1st rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc around and in each ch of crotch. Join. 2nd to 7th rnds incl: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join. 8th rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in each dc around. Join. 9th rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, * ch 3, sc in next 3 dc. Repeat from * around: Join and break off. Work other leg the same way.

PETTICOAT ... Cut a piece of organdy 2 ½ inches wide and 18 inches long. Sew 1 ¾ inches of narrow ends together. Gather to fit waist. Make a ⅛ inch hem on lower edge. Sew hook and eye to opening.

RUFFLE ... 1st rnd: Attach White to lower edge and sc closely around. Join. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, 3 dc in each sc around. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 1, * sc in next 6 dc, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

Starch dress, petticoat and panta­loons lightly and press.
