Ridged Square Bedspread Pattern #207

A simple bedspread in a conventional design will be very effective in all white or ecru but may be made even more attractive by crocheting the ridges and border in a contrasting color. If desired, a group of matching blocks may be joined to make a cover for a bedside table or bureau.

Very attractive effects may be had by crocheting the ridges in a contrasting color.

COLOR COMBINATIONS
Ecru and 116 Blossom Pink
White and 9 Yellow
88 Peach and 26 Nile Green
25 Crystal Blue and 68 Skipper Blue

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Knitting and Crochet Cotton or J. & P. Coats Crochet Cord.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4 or 5.

One block requires about 90 yds. of thread, and measures 8 inches. Finished spread, 11 x 13 blocks, measures about 81 x 108 inches.

The ridges and border are made in contrasting color. Every 12 inches of border requires about 20 yds. of thread, and each block about 10 yds. for ridges. Note the number of yds. indicated on the ball and determine the amount of material necessary.

Always pick up back loop of st in working block, unless otherwise specified. To begin, ch 8, and join to form ring.

1st rnd: Ch 11 (always to count as 1 tr in last group of tr and to form 4th corner of bl), 4 tr in ring, * ch 7, 4 tr in ring, and repeat from * once more, then ch 7, 3 tr in ring, and join with sl st to 4th st of ch-11 first made (4 4-tr groups in rnd). Then sl st into next 4 sts (which brings thread to center st of ch-7). 2nd rnd: Ch 11, 1 tr in same st as last sl st, * 1 tr in each of next 4 sts, ch 2, skip 2 tr, 1 tr in each of next 5 sts, ch 7, 1 tr in same st as last tr, and repeat from * around, making 4 tr instead of 5 tr in last group and join with sl st to 4th st of ch-11 first made (8 4-tr groups in rnd). Then sl st into next 4 sts as in 1st rnd. 3rd rnd: Ch 11, 1 tr in same st as last sl st, * 1 tr in each of next 8 sts, ch 2, skip ch-2 of previous rnd, 1 tr in each of next 9 sts, ch 7, 1 tr in same st as last tr, and repeat from * around making 1 tr less in the last tr group than in other groups, since the first 4 sts of ch-11 count as 1 tr in the last group. Join as previously. 4th to 8th rnds incl: Continue working as in 3rd rnd, thus increasing 4 tr at corners in each rnd, and making tr in tr and sp over sp until in the 8th rnd there are 29 tr in each tr group. Join as previously. 9th rnd: Ch 8, 1 d c in last sl st (this forms corner sp), ** ch 3, skip 3 sts, 1 d c in first tr, * ch 2, skip 2 tr, 1 d c in next, and repeat from * until 10 sps (besides corner sp) are made, then ch 2, skip 1 tr, 1 d c in ch-2 sp, ch 2, skip 1 tr, 1 d c in next, ch 2, and make 9 more sps having last d c in last tr of previous rnd, then ch 3, skip 3 sts, 1 d c in next, ch 5, 1 d c in same st as last d c (to form corner) and repeat from ** around block ending rnd with sl st in 3rd st of ch-5 first made. Break off. With contrasting color make ridges on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th and 8th rnds as follows: Fasten thread to the front loop of first st at corner of 1st rnd, ch 1, * 1 s c in front loop of next st, and repeat from * around, making 2 s c in each corner st. Join blocks together on the wrong side with over and over stitches.

BORDER. 1st row: Attach thread to 1st d c at corner, ch 4 (to count as 1 tr), 2 tr in next sp, 1 tr in next d c (4 tr make 1 bl), ** ch 5, * 1 s c in next d c, ch 5, skip 1 sp, 1 bl in next sp, ch 2, skip 1 sp, 1 bl in next sp, ch 5, 1 s c in next d c, ch 5, skip next sp *, 6 bls (19 tr in group), turn. 2nd row: Sl st into first 3 tr of previous row, ch 4, 1 tr in each of next 12 tr, skip 2 tr, 1 tr in last tr, ch 5, turn. 3rd row: Skip 3 tr, 1 tr in each of next 7 tr, turn. 4th row: Sl st into first 3 tr, ch 4, skip 3 tr, 1 tr in last tr, ch 5, turn. 1 sl st in 1st tr of previous row, ch 5, 1 sl st in 1st tr of 2nd row, ch 5, 1 sl st in 1st tr of 1st row, ch 5, skip 1 sp, and repeat between *'s of 1st row once, then work 4 bls (13 tr in group). The center of this group will be at joining of blocks, turn. 2nd row: Sl st into 1st 3 sts, ch 4, 1 tr in each of next 6 tr, skip 2 tr, 1 tr in last tr, ch 5, turn. 3rd row: Skip 3 tr, 1 tr in next, ch 5, 1 s c in 1st tr of 2nd row, ch 5, 1 s c in 1st tr of 1st row, and repeat from ** to within 1 sp of the next corner.

CORNER. 1st row: 1 bl in next sp, 8 tr in corner sp, 1 bl in next sp (16 tr in group), turn. 2nd row: Sl st into 1st 3 tr, ch 4, 1 tr in each of next 10 tr, skip 2 tr, 1 tr in last tr, ch 5, turn. 3rd row: Skip 2 tr, 1 tr in each of next 4 tr, turn. 4th row: Sl st into 1st 2 sts, ch 4, 1 tr in last tr of 4-tr group, ch 5, turn. 1 s c in 1st tr of 3rd row, ch 5, 1 s c in 1st tr of 2nd row, ch 5, 1 s c in 1st tr of 1st row, and repeat from **.
