Garden Paths Bedspread Pattern #211

Materials:
Clark's O.N.T. Knitting and Crochet Cotton or J. & P. Coats Crochet Cord.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 3, 4, 5, or 6.

For a full sized spread about 36 balls of the Knitting and Crochet Cotton are required or about three times as many of the Crochet Cord.

The 5 inch square filet blocks are made first and are then joined to each other at the corners.

FILET BLOCK. To begin, ch 6 and join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 7 (to count as 1 d c and ch-4), * 1 d c in ring, ch 4, and repeat from * until 7 d c (besides ch-7) with ch-4 between are made. Then ch 1, 1 d c in 3rd st of ch-7 first made. 2nd rnd: Ch 8 (to count as 1 tr and ch-4), * 1 tr under next ch-4 sp, ch 10 (for corner), 1 tr under next ch-4 sp, ch 4, and repeat from * twice more, then 1 tr under next ch-4 sp, ch 10, join with sl st to 4th st of ch-8 first made. 3rd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as 1 d c), 1 d c in each of next 10 sts, * ch 5 (for corner), 1 d c in each of next 16 sts, and repeat from * twice more, ch 5, 1 d c in each of next 5 sts, and join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3 first made. Hereafter pick up only back loop of each st of previous rnd. 4th rnd: Sl st to next d c (7th d c from corner), ch 5, * skip 2 d c, 1 d c in each of next 6 d c, 1 pc st in next d c, 1 d c in each of next 3 sts of ch-5, ch 5, 1 d c in same st as last d c, 1 d c in each of next 2 sts, 1 pc st in next d c, 1 d c in each of next 6 d c, ch 2, and repeat from * around, ending rnd with 5 d c, and sl st to 3rd st of ch-5 first made. 5th rnd: Ch 5, skip ch-2 sp, 1 d c in d c, * ch 2, skip 2 d c, 1 d c in each of next 6 d c, 1 pc st in next d c, 1 d c in each of next 3 sts of ch-5, ch 5, 1 d c in same st as last d c, 1 d c in each of next 2 d c, 1 pc st in next d c, 1 d c in each of next 6 d c, ch 2, skip 2 d c, 1 d c in next d c, sp over sp, and repeat from * around, ending rnd with ch 2, sl st in 3rd st of ch-5 first made. 6th and 7th rnds: Follow this method of increasing 2 sps in each section for each rnd and enlarging block at the corners by adding 3 additional d c at each corner as in 4th and 5th rnds. Join rnds with sl st. 8th rnd: Work same way as previous rnd, omitting the pc st and making 1 d c in place of it. Join rnd with sl st and break off thread. This completes a block. Make as many blocks as necessary and join them only at the ch-5 corners with an over and over stitch. Thus open spaces the same size as the blocks will be formed between blocks.

FILL IN BLOCK. Work into each of these spaces as follows: Attach thread to the st where thread was fastened off in completing the block, ch 5. 1st rnd: 8 sps in this block, making the d c of last sp in last d c of 10-dc group, then * 1 d c in 1st d c of 10-dc group of next block, 15 sps on same block, and repeat from * around the next 2 blocks and 6 sps on the 4th block, ch 2, and sl st to 3rd st of ch-5 first made. This makes 15 sps on each block besides corner sps. 2nd rnd: Ch 4, 4-tr cluster in next sp which is center sp of block, ch 6, skip 1 sp, 4-tr cluster in next sp, ch 6, skip 1 sp, 4-tr cluster in next sp, ch 4, skip 1 sp, 4-tr cluster in next sp, ** skip 3 sps including corner sp, 4-tr cluster in next sp, ch 4, skip 1 sp, 1 cluster in next sp, * ch 6, skip 1 sp, 1 cluster in next sp, and repeat from * 3 more times, ch 4, skip 1 sp, 1 cluster in next sp, and repeat from ** around, making 3 clusters with ch between on 1st block. Join with ch-1, 1 d c in 4th st of ch-4 made with first cluster. 3rd rnd: Ch 4, 1 cluster over d c just made, * ch 6, 1 cluster under next ch-6 loop, ch 4, 1 cluster under next ch-6 loop, skip 2 ch-4 loops at corner, 1 cluster under next ch-6 loop (on next block), ch 4, 1 cluster under next ch-6 loop, and repeat from * around ending rnd with 1 cluster on first block, ch 4, and sl st to center st of ch-6 between next 2 clusters. 4th rnd: Ch 4, 1 cluster under same ch loop, * ch 4, skip 2 ch-4 loops at corner, 1 cluster under ch-6 loop of next block, and repeat from * around. Join last ch-4 with sl st to 4th st of ch-4 made with 1st cluster. Break off thread.

EDGING AROUND SPREAD. 1st rnd: Attach thread to 3rd st of ch-5 at one of the points, ch 8, 1 d c in same st from which ch-8 started, * ch 2, skip 2 sts, 1 d c in first d c of 10-dc group, ch 2, skip 2 sts, 1 d c in next and continue making sps (16 sps besides corner sp made with ch-8) having d c of last sp in last d c of 10-dc group on same block; then, 1 d c in 1st d c of 10-dc group of next block, and continue making sps (10 sps) to next point, ch 5, 1 d c in same st as last d c, and repeat from * around entire spread. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-8 first made. 2nd rnd: Ch 4, 1 cluster in corner sp, ch 6, 1 cluster in same sp, * ch 6, skip 1 sp, 1 cluster in next sp *, and repeat between *'s until 7 clusters with ch-6 between (besides 2 corner clusters) are made. Then ch 3, skip 5 sps (including sp at corner where blocks are joined), 1 cluster in next sp, and repeat between *'s until 8 clusters with ch-6 between are made on this side of block, then ch 6, 1 cluster in same sp (which is a corner). Continue thus around spread. Join last ch-6 to first cluster with sl st. 3rd rnd: Ch 4, 1 cluster under ch-6 at corner, ch 5, 1 cluster under same ch, * ch 5, 1 cluster under next ch-6 *, and repeat between *'s until 7 clusters (besides 2 clusters at corners) with ch-5 between are made. Then skip ch-3 at joining of blocks, 1 cluster under next ch-6, and repeat between *s until 8 clusters with ch-5 between are made on this side of block, then ch 5, 1 cluster in same sp (which is a corner). Continue thus around spread. Join last ch-5 to first cluster with a sl st. 4th rnd: Under each ch-5 make 1 s c, 1 half d c, 5 d c, 1 half d c, 1 s c.
