Materials:
Clark's O.N.T. Knitting and Crochet Cotton or J. & P. Coats Crochet Cord.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4 or 5.

One block requires about 100 yds. of thread and measures about 9 inches. Note the number of yds. indicated on the ball of thread to determine the amount of material necessary. Finished spread 9 x 10 squares, including joining and border, measure about 2¼ x 2½ yds. The blocks or squares of this spread are worked separately from the center and joined together in working the last row of meshes.

SQUARE. 1st row: Wind thread 16 times around a small pencil or the han­dles of 2 crochet hooks, forming ring, slip ring off, ch 3 and work 16 d c in ring, sl st in 3rd st of ch-3. 2nd row: Ch 8, 1 d c in same 1st st, * ch 5, sk 3 d c, 2 d c in next d c with ch-5 be­tween, and repeat from * twice, ch 5, 1 sl st in 3rd st of ch-8. 3rd row: Ch 3, 7 d c over ch-5 with ch-5 between 3rd and 4th d c, ch 3, 1 s c in 3rd st of ch-5, ch 3, 8 d c over next ch-5 with ch-5 between 4th and 5th d c, forming 1 lacet and corner, repeat this twice more, 1 lacet joining with sl st in 3rd st of ch 3. 4th row: Ch 3, 1 d c in each of next 2 d c (catching the hook in back thread of d c throughout square), 1 pc st as follows: ch 1, 5 d c in next d c, drop st from hook, insert hook back in ch-1 and draw loop of last d c through the one on hook, 1 d c in each of next 2 ch sts, 2 d c in next ch st with ch-5 between; work 1 d c in each of next 2 sts, 1 pc st in next and 1 d c in each of next 3 d c, forming corner, work next 3 corners like 1st with ch-5 between, skipping the lacet of preceding row, forming large mesh, join with sl st in 3rd st of ch 3. 5th row: Ch 3, 1 d c in each of next 5 sts, 1 pc st in next, 1 d c in each of next 2 sts, 2 d c in next st with ch-5 between, 1 d c in each of next 2 sts, 1 pc st in next, 1 d c in each of next 6 d c, 1 lacet as in 3rd row, work next 3 corners of d c group in pc st like 1st, joining with sl st in 3rd st of ch-3.

6th row: Ch 3, 2 d c, 1 pc st, 5 d c, 1 pc st, 2 d c, 2 d c in next st with ch-5 between, 2 d c, 1 pc st, 5 d c, 1 pc st, 3 d c, ch 5, sk lacet and work next 3 corners in same manner as 1st, join with sl st. 7th row: Ch 3, 5 d c, 1 pc st, 5 d c, 1 pc st, 2 d c, 2 d c in next st with ch-5 between, 2 d c, 1 pc st, 5 d c, 1 pc st, 6 d c, 1 lacet, work around next 3 corners like 1st, join with sl st.

8th row: Ch 3, 2 d c, 1 pc st, 5 d c, 1 pc st, 5 d c, 1 pc st, 2 d c, 2 d c in next st with ch-5 between, 2 d c, 1 pc st, 5 d c, 1 pc st, 5 d c, 1 pc st, 3 d c, ch 5 as in 6th row, work next 3 corners like 1st, joining with sl st. 9th row: Ch 8, sk 5 sts, work 6 d c, 1 pc st, 6 d c, ch 2, sk 2 sts, 2 d c in next st with ch-5 be­tween, ch 2, sk 2 sts, 6 d c, 1 pc st, 6 d c, ch 5, sk 5 sts, 1 d c in next st, 1 lacet (ch 3, 1 s c in 3rd st of ch-5, ch 3). Work next 3 corners to corre­spond with 1st, join in 3rd st of ch-8.

10th row: Ch 6, sk 2 sts, 1 s c in next st, ch 3, sk 2 sts, 1 d c in each of next 3 d c, 1 pc st, 5 d c, 1 pc st, 3 d c, ch 5, sk 5 sts, 2 d c in next st with ch-5 be­tween, ch 5, sk 5 sts, 3 d c, 1 pc st, 5 d c, 1 pc st, 3 d c, 1 lacet, 1 large mesh, work around next 3 corners as around 1st, join in 3rd st of ch-6. 11th row: 1 large mesh as in 9th row, 1 lacet, 6 d c (7 d c in group), 1 lacet, 2 d c, 2 d c in next st with ch-5 between, 3 d c, 1 lacet, 6 d c, 1 lacet, 1 large mesh, 1 lacet, work next 3 corners to corre­spond with 1st, join in 3rd st of ch-8.

12th row: 1 lacet as in 10th row, 1 large mesh, 2 d c, 1 pc st, 3 d c, 1 large mesh, 2 d c, 1 pc st, 3 d c, ch 5, 1 d c in same st, 2 d c, 1 pc st, 3 d c, 1 large mesh, 2 d c, 1 pc st, 3 d c, 1 large mesh, 1 lacet, 1 large mesh, work around next 3 cor­ners as around 1st, join in 3rd st of ch-6.

13th row: 1 large mesh as in 11th row, 2 filet meshes (ch 2, sk 2 sts, 1 d c in next st forms 1 mesh), 1 large mesh, 2 filet meshes, 1 large mesh, 1 d c, 1 pc st, 1 d c, 2 d c in next st with ch-5 between, 1 d c, 1 pc st, 1 d c, 1 large mesh, 2 filet meshes, 1 large mesh, 2 filet meshes, 1 large mesh, 2 filet meshes. Continue working in this manner around, join in 3rd st of ch-8. 14th row: 1 s c in same st, ch 3, sk 2 sts, 1 s c in next st, forming 1 small mesh, work small meshes to corner, ch 3, 1 s c in same st for corner, 26 meshes, then corner mesh all around, join in 1st s c.

JOINING. Join by working last row of 2nd square as follows: Work to corner, ch 1, 1 s c in corner mesh of 1st square, ch 1, 1 s c in same corner st of 2nd square, ch 1, 1 s c in next mesh of 1st square, ch 1, sk 2 sts, 1 s c in next st, continue in this manner across square.

EDGING. 1st row: Work 1 s c in every other small mesh with ch-7 between each s c all around the edge. 2nd row: 1 s c in every 4th st of ch loop of preceding row with ch-7 between. 3rd row: 1 s c in 4th st of ch-7, then work in next s c, 3 tr, 1 pc st (5 tr), 3 tr, then 1 s c in 4th st of next ch-7, ch 5, 1 s c in 4th st of next ch-7, work shell with pc st in every other s c with ch-5 between (for corner work 4 tr, 1 pc st, 4 tr). 4th row: 1 s c in 3rd st of ch-5, ch 2, 1 d c in 2nd tr, ch 5, 1 s c in 1st ch forming picot, 2 d c in st middle of shell with picot between, 1 picot, skip 1 tr, 1 d c in next, ch 2, 1 s c in 3rd of next ch-5, continue work­ing in this manner all around. Work 6 d c with picot between around corner shell.
