Bunting Pattern #5230

MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY WOOL, 12 balls (¾ oz. balls).
Steel Crochet Hook, size G.
2 yards ribbon, 1½ inches wide.
1½ yards ribbon, 1 inch wide.

GAUGE: 2 puff sts make 1 inch; 4 rows (2 puff st rows and 2 sc rows) make 1 inch.

BUNTING … Starting at bottom, make a chain 45 inches long. 1st row: Sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across until there are 212 sc in row. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: H dc in next 2 sts, * ch 2, insert hook in same place where last st was made and draw loop through to measure ½ inch, (yarn over, insert hook in same place and draw loop through) twice; yarn over and draw through all 6 loops on hook, skip 2 sc, sc in next sc (puff st is made). Repeat from * across until there are 69 puff sts in row, then work h dc in same place as last sc, h dc in each of last 2 sts. Ch 2, turn. 3rd row: Sc in 1st 4 sts, * 2 sc under next ch-2, sc in next st. Repeat from * across ending with 1 sc under last ch-2, sc in next 2 sts, sc in top of turning ch-2. Ch 2, turn (212 sc). Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until piece measures 20 inches, ending with 3rd row. Ch 2, turn. Next row (1st short row): Work in pattern until there are 17 puff sts. Ch 1, turn. Following row: Sc in sc, 2 sc under ch-2 and continue in pattern to end of row. Ch 2, turn. Next row: Work in pattern until there are 16 puff sts. Ch 1, turn. Continue in this manner, decreasing 1 puff st at end of each puff st row until only 13 puff sts remain, ending with sc row. Fasten off.
   Attach yarn in same sc where 17th puff st of 1st short row was completed. Ch 2, insert hook in same place and complete a puff st as before. Continue in pattern across until there are 35 puff sts. Ch 1, turn. Next row: Sc in sc, 2 sc under ch-2. Continue working sc across, ending with 1 sc in ch-2 of last puff st. Ch 1, turn. Following row: Skip 2 sc, sc in next sc, ch 2, insert hook in same place and com­plete a puff st as before. Continue in pattern across, ending with sc in 3rd st from end of row (1 puff st decreased at each end of row). Ch 1, turn. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately until only 27 puff sts remain, ending with sc row. Fasten off. Attach yarn to 17 remaining puff sts and work to correspond with 1st section.

HOOD … Starting at Front edge, ch 92. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (91 sc). Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row 2 more times, then work in pattern as on Bunting (28 puff sts) until piece measures 6 inches, ending with sc row. Turn. Next row: Sl st in next 6 sts, ch 2 and work 26 puff sts across, ending with sc of last puff st. Ch 1, turn. Following row: Work sc across, ending with 1 sc in ch-2 of last puff st. Turn. Next row: Sl st in next 6 sts, ch 2, then work in pattern across until there are 22 puff sts. Ch 1, turn. Continue in this manner, decreasing 2 puff sts at each end of each puff st row until 6 puff sts remain, ending with sc row. Fasten off. This is back of Hood.

FINISHING … Sew seam at back of hood. Sew shaped edges of top of bunt­ing, starting at side edges and sewing toward center, leaving 2½ inches not sewed at each side of front (4½ inches at back of neck). Bind front edges of bunting and hood with wide ribbon. Sew bottom of bunting, then, with invisible sts, sew front edges of binding together for 12 inches from bottom edge. Cut nar­row ribbon into four equal pieces and sew on as in illustration.
