MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY BUNTING (¾ oz. balls).
For Sacque—4 balls of main color, 2 balls of contrasting color.
For Bonnet—2 balls of main color, 1 ball of contrasting color.
For Booties—1 ball of main color, 1 ball of contrasting color.
If entire set is made, 6 balls of main color and 2 balls of contrasting color are sufficient.
Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).
2 yards ribbon, 1 inch wide (for Bonnet).
2 yards ribbon, ½ inch wide (l yard for Sacque, 1 yard for Booties).
SACQUE
Starting at neck edge with main color, ch 68 (to measure 10 inches). 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (67 sc). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: * 2 dc at base of ch-3, skip 2 sc, sc in next sc, ch 3. Repeat from * across, ending with sc (22 shells). Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Working in back loop only of each st, work * sc in sc, sc in next 2 dc, sc in next ch, ch 3. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in top of turning ch-3. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: * Skip 4 sc and 2 ch, sc in back loop only of next ch, ch 2. Repeat from * across, ending with sc. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: * Sc in sc, 3 sc in next sp. Repeat from * across, ending with 2 sc in last sp, sc in turning ch (88 sc). Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 2nd to 5th rows incl for pattern, hereafter working only 2 sc (instead of 3) in both the 1st and last sp on 5th row of pattern. There will be 29 shells on next row, 38 shells on 3rd shell row, 50 shells on 4th shell row, 66 shells on 5th shell row. Work the 3rd and 4th rows of pattern once more, then work as follows: Next row: (5th row of pattern) : * Sc in sc, 2 sc in next sp, sc in sc, 3 sc in next sp. Repeat from * across (232 sc). Work 2nd row of pattern (77 shells). Fasten off.
SLEEVES … With wrong side facing, skip 11 shells, attach yarn to next sc. Work sc in same place, sc in next 2 dc and continue in pattern across 16 shells in all, ending with sc in ch. Ch 3, turn. Next row: Work 4th row of pattern (16 sps). Ch 1, turn. Following row: * Sc in sc, 2 sc in next sp. Repeat from * across (49 sc). Work straight in pattern, always working 2 sc in each sp on 5th row of pattern, until Sleeve measures 4½ inches, ending with shell row. Fasten off. With wrong side facing, skip 23 shells for Back, attach yarn to next sc and work other Sleeve in same way.
BODY … With wrong side facing attach yarn at front edge, work across 11 shells of 1st Front, work across 23 shells of Back, work across 11 shells of 2nd Front. Ch 3, turn. Work in pattern on these 45 shells, working 3 sc in each sp on 5th row of pattern (181 sc). Work straight as on Sleeves on these 60 shells (2 sc in each sp on 5th row of pattern) until piece measures 9 inches from back of neck, ending with 3rd row of pattern. Fasten off.
TRIMMING … Working in same direction, as last row, attach contrasting color to back loop of 1st sc. Work sc in same place where thread was attached, sc in back loop only of each st and each ch across. Fasten off. With right side facing, holding bottom of sacque toward you, work contrasting color in same way along row directly above each row of holes. Work contrasting color trimming on Sleeves also.
Cut two ½-yard lengths of ribbon ½ inch wide. Make a loop at one end of each piece and sew to sides of neck, as in illustration.
BONNET
Starting at back edge, with main color ch 26. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (25 sc). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: * 2 dc at base of ch-3, skip 2 sc, sc in next sc, ch 3. Repeat from * across, ending with sc (8 shells). Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Working in back loop only of each st, work * sc in next 2 dc, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across (24 sc). Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Same as 2nd row, ending with sc under turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 3rd and 4th rows alternately until piece measures 4 inches, ending with 4th row. Ch 26, turn. Next row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 24 ch, sc in back loop only of next 2 dc, sc in next ch and continue in pattern across. Ch 27, turn. Following row: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, (skip 2 ch, sc in next ch, ch 3, 2 dc at base of ch-3) 7 times; sc in next sc, ch 3 and continue in pattern across (24 shells). Ch 3, turn. Continue to work in pattern until piece measures 8 inches in all, ending with shell row. Fasten off. This is front edge.
BRIM … Sew side seams (ridges are on right side of Bonnet). Brim is worked in ridges of 2nd row of shells from front edge as follows: 1st row: With right side out and back of Bonnet toward you, attach yarn to front loop of 1st dc of 1st shell. Sc in same place where thread was attached, sc in front loop of each st and each ch across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Same as 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows of Sacque. 5th row: * Sc in sc, 2 sc in next sp. Repeat from * across, ending with 2 sc in last sp, sc in turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows once more. Fasten off.
TRIMMING … Working in same direction as last row, attach contrasting color to back loop of 1st sc. Sc in same place where thread was attached, sc in back loop only of each st and each ch across. Fasten off. Holding edge of Brim toward you, and working in same direction, attach contrasting color to 1st sc of row directly above holes (on front of Brim) and work in same way. Fasten off.
Make two bows of 1-inch ribbon and sew one at each side of brim. Cut remaining 1-inch ribbon in half and sew one tie under each bow.
BOOTIES
FOOT … 1st row: With main color, ch 11. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 9 ch (10 sc). Ch 3, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Same as 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows of Bonnet. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 3rd and 4th rows once more. This completes toe piece. Ch 26, turn. Next row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 24 ch, sc in back loop only of next 2 dc, sc in next ch and continue in pattern across toe piece. Ch 27, turn. Following row: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, (skip 2 ch, sc in next ch, ch 3, 2 dc at base of ch-3) 7 times; sc in next sc, ch 3 and continue in pattern across (19 shells). Ch 3, turn. Continue to work in pattern until there are 4 rows with 19 shells, ending with sc row. Fasten off (bottom edge). Sew sides of toe piece in place (ridges are on right side of Bootie).
TOP … 1st row: With wrong side facing attach yarn at top of back opening and work 40 sc around top of Foot. Ch 3, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Same as 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows of Sacque. 5th row: * Sc in sc, 2 sc in next sp. Repeat from * across, ending with 2 sc in last sp, sc in turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the last 4 rows until Bootie measures 3 inches from top of foot, ending with 3rd row of pattern.
TRIMMING … Working in same direction as last row, attach contrasting color to back loop of 1st sc. Sc in same place where thread was attached, sc in back loop only of each st and each ch across. Fasten off. Holding top of Bootie toward you and working in same direction, attach contrasting color to 1st sc of row directly above holes (on right side of Bootie) and work in same way. Fasten off.
Cut two ½-yard lengths of ribbon ½ inch wide. Run ribbon through at ankle and tie bow in front, as in illustration.
