Columbia-Minerva Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein)
Light Color--5 Skeins
Dark Color--6 Skeins
Contrasting Color for Embroidered Center--1 Skein
--OR--
Columbia-Minerva Nantuk 4 Ply Knitting Yarn (Knitting Worsted Size--2 or 4 oz. skein)
Light Color--20 oz.
Dark Color--24 oz.
Contrasting Color for Embroidered Center--1 oz.

1 "Boye" Aluminum Crochet Hook "I" (Size 8)

Gauge: 1 Motif measures 3 inches square

1 "Hiawatha" Blunt End Tapestry Needle

First Motif: (Dark Color Centers)

With Dark Color Ch. 5, slip St. to first Ch. to form ring.

Row 1--Ch 4, *1 D.C. in ring, Ch 1, repeat from * 10 times more, slip St. to 3rd Ch. at start, break yarn and draw Light Color through loop on hook.

Row 2--1 S.C. in joining, *Ch 1, 1 S.C. in next D.C., repeat from * 10 times more, Ch. 1, slip St. to first St.

Row 3--Ch 1, 1 S.C. in same St. as slip St., *Ch 1, skip next Ch 1 space and St., (2 D.C., Ch 3, 2 D.C.) in next Ch 1 space for corner, Ch 1, skip next St. and Ch 1 space, 1 S.C. in next St., repeat from * 3 times more, ending Ch 1, slip St. to first St. Break yarn and fasten.

Make 140 Motifs

Second Motif: (Light Color Centers)

With Light Color Ch 5, slip St. to first Ch. to form ring.

Row 1--Work same as Row 1 of First Motif, drawing Dark Color through loop of last St.

Row 2--With Dark Color work same as Row 2 of First Motif.

Row 3--Joining Row: With Dark Color Ch 1, 1 S.C. in same St. as slip St., Ch 1, skip next Ch 1 space and St., 2 D.C. in next Ch 1 space, Ch 1, 1 S.C. in a Ch 3 space at corner of First Motif (Dark Color Center), Ch 1, 2 D.C. in same space of Second Motif, 1 S.C. in next Ch 1 space of First Motif, skip next St. and Ch 1 space of Second Motif and work 1 S.C. in next St., 1 S.C. in next Ch 1 space of First Motif, Ch 1, skip next Ch 1 space and St. of Second Motif, 2 D.C. in next Ch 1 space, Ch 1, 1 S.C. in Ch 3 of second corner of First Motif, Ch 1, 2 D.C. in same space of Second Motif, then continue around Second Motif with Row 3 of Pattern.

Complete 1 Strip in this manner, alternating First and Second Motifs until there are 14 Motifs in Strip.

Second Strip--Starting with Second Motif, alternate Second and First Motifs across, joining to First Strip at the same time on Row 3. Continue to alternate Motifs in Strips in this manner until there are 20 Striped. Make 72 First Motifs and join 1 row around entire Afghan.

Edging: With Dark Color work 2 rows of S.C., then with Light Color work 1 row of S.C. around entire Afghan, working 3 S.C. in each corner.

Embroidery: With Contrasting Color and Blunt End Tapestry Needle embroider a Star at center of each Motif with Light Color Centers.
